Like 3 seasons too late?

What a difference a year makes.  Last year everyone was singing his praises on how he handled the off-season.

Are they gonna hire Dubas too, he can trade Kadri again.

I'm sad he won't be able to buy out anymore contracts

I actually think that is a bigger fear at this point than the Leafs not resigning him.  He may not want to come back.  There are a couple interesting open positions that present different challenges than the Leafs.

He tried to make the best of a really bad situation, but Markstrom imploding and Vladar not being able to step in to stop the bleeding basically did him in. All they really need next season is their goaltending and Huberdeau to bounce back, and they're back to being a pretty good team in a weaker conference and division.

We'll see how the playoffs go.  If the Leafs make it far (conference final or better) but don't win, maybe Dubas has unfinished business here and would want to see it to the end.  If they're out early, he's gone anyway.

Pittsburgh could be an interesting project for him.

If I were Dubas, I'd be massively intrigued by this job. You have Crosby for another couple of years at his $8.7m cap hit. Then I imagine he might do some kind of lower cap hit deal.

I wonder if he could make room in their salary cap to make a run at someone like Matthews out of contract at the end of next season.

And then as that story suggests, he'd have complete control with no president above him.

Really intriguing job I think.

Not a huge surprise. Lot of rumblings of unhappy players and without the results to back that up no real reason to keep him around.
