Dion was a healthy scratch in the Kings last game.
He understandably wasn't too pleased with that and spoke with both Desjardins (the coach) as well as the GM Blake.
The Athletic has a good article about this .
IMO, thank heavens the Leafs traded him without retaining any salary.

Joe

Should have kept phaneuf and gotten rid of the worst dman in the leagueⓇ that remains with the leafs.

What he was really pissed off about is that they replaced him with a traffic cone wearing skates.

Apparently Phaneuf has officially retired, what with his contract being done and all.

Yeah, apparently they'll be honouring him before tonight's game. Which is fine. I don't have any specific bad thoughts for him or anything but it's hard to separate him from a lot of the crap that went on during his time here. He was always wildly overrated by some people and he's kind of a symbol of Burke's lousy team building to begin with and to be entirely honest if you asked me to name all of the Leafs' captains I'll probably forget him in five years but, you know, good job by you Dion. You certainly did your best.

He's still getting paid this and next year. $354,167 from the Sens because of retained salary and $1,062,500 from LA.

Funny note..Mike Richards who had his contract terminated by LA will be collecting from them for another 11 years including this season. 900k,900k,700k,700k,600k,600k,600k,600k,500k,500k,400k....nice payday for a guy who hasn't played since 2016...10.5 mill to go away.
And another one... Dipietro hasn't played for the Isles since 2013 yet has been collecting 1.5 mill per and will do so until 2028/29 season. 24 million to go away. Gotta be the worst contract ever.

Joe

The same will happen to Weber - I don't think he's ever playing again and I think he's under contract until '26.

Yup. Weber will only make 3,1,1,1 in the next 4 years.

Back in January 2020, it was reported that Phaneuf met with Shanahan for some unspecified reason, which is now revealed to be what how he wanted to handle his retirement announcement, coinciding with Jerome Iginla's Hall of Fame induction this week.
