Off to the Dodgers.... He'll at least see some asses in the seats...

Are the jays retaining 95% of his salary?

Joe

Sports net is saying between 16-18 mil of his 20 mil jays will cover.

So 40 mil+ for 2 players not to play. Good thing there isn't a salary cap.

Well, yeah, but the alternative is paying them 100% of their salary to play badly.

I'm really looking forward to watching some of the young guys play full-time. Sure, this team is probably going to suck next year, but there are some nice pieces coming up and some significant financial flexibility available soon. Hopefully Rogers lets management play this out to fruition...

I'm complaining. Just is an astounding amount of money.

In the Martin scenario they're essentially paying 18mil for a couple of prospects.

Sad to see Martin go, but Jansen with enough playing time will be pretty capable of being the Jays #1 catcher.  He already demonstrated his ability with swiftness & precision in the short time he was called up.

Wishing Martin all the best in L.A.

Sure, but that dead money is a pretty inevitable consequence of AA's kicking the can down the road. Signing 32 year old catchers to 5 year, big money deals had a downside and this is it.

I might regret asking this question, but couldn't they just have made Jansen the #1, and Martin as back-up?

They could have, sure, but it seems pretty unlikely that Martin would be all that happy catching 30-45 games next year and this way they save a little bit of money and add some bodies.

Sure. This is partly as a courtesy to Martin, and partly so that they can use the backup spot for another young catcher in a platoon instead.

The money is the same either way, but this way, they add some organizational depth and create options.

You're forgetting about maile as well - who was superior to Martin in every way last season.
