So Dubas was in New York to scout the Rangers versus the Calgary Flames.  And the Rangers had scouts in Toronto when we played Pittsburgh.  Hmm.

What Rangers player would be of interest to the leafs?  (Who might the rangers realistically give up that we could fit under our cap?)

I can't help but think there might still be some interest in Brendan Smith. He was lousy last year which is why the Rangers put him on waivers but he's played well for Babcock in the past. If the Rangers were willing to eat some of his salary he could probably be had at a very reasonable asset cost.

Dubas also doesn't really strike me as a guy who would consider a 1-game, in-person scouting assignment like that to be all that valuable when assessing a player.

Probably not, but also in Manhatten is Jeff Gotten, I assume. So  it could be him Dubas was visiting and he likes to go to hockey games.

What Rangers defensemen are on expiring contracts?

Brady Skjei seems like a 'Dubas' type of player but why would New York trade him?

LeBrun and Dreger confirm that Gross was at the game and the two were seen talking. So Nylander has successfully hijacked yet another thread.

Gardiner for Shattenkirk (1M retained) + McQuaid?  :o  :-X

Interesting.  So this was about Nylander.  Not in terms of a trade.  It's good that Dubas and his agent are still talking.  I really don't think Nylander is going to want to sit out for the year.  And the $40,000 he's sacrificing with each passing day has gotta hurt.  I'm sure he's nearing the point where he's going to feel that he is finished his little protest.  We'll probably see something happen one way or the other relatively soon.  How rare is it for a player to sit out for the year?  Particularly a player of this caliber.

Unless I'm missing someone It hasn't happened in nearly 20 years.

In 2000-01 Mike Peca sat out year as an RFA because he couldn't agree to terms with the Sabres Eric Lindros sat out that season too, but that was because he didn't want to play for the Flyers.

Even if nothing is imminent, and I don't think it is, you'd have to think that having a good familiarity with the Rangers wouldn't hurt as they figure to be a seller and the Leafs potentially will be buyers at the deadline.

You can find a lot of Nylander talk in this thread, maybe just check the last few pages or so for recent info: http://www.tmlfans.ca/community/index.php?topic=5002.1185

But in a nutshell: will he get traded? No. There's really zero information out there that's suggests the Leafs are even remotely considering that right now.

Is he close to signing? There's been more reports of dialogue between Dubas and Nylander/Nylander's agent in the last 1.5-2 weeks than we heard through most of the offseason, so things are pointing in the right direction. Who knows how long it takes though.
