This is from Friedman's 31 thoughts:

Quote4. As training camps open, there's no clarity on Rick Nash's future. There were plenty of teams who checked in (Las Vegas and Toronto believed to be among them), and a GM indicated he heard one club was willing to offer $16 million over three years. Wife Jessica recently gave birth to their third child, and Nash's injury history (including multiple concussions) had him seriously considering retirement. Agent Joe Resnick: "Nothing has changed since July 1. Status quo."

My gut instinct is that, if true, this is more a case of Dubas doing due dilligence than a serious burning need but I do think that in terms of a short term deal for a reasonable hit that it actually makes a fair amount of sense. Something to try and replace a little of what the team lost with JVR.

You know, he'd be a pretty nice fit on the 3rd line with Kadri and Kapanen/Brown.

That being said, I would think that his signing would ultimately mean less playing time for Johnsson and wouldn't affect Hyman's status as a top 6 LW, even though it really should.

Old and slow. Hard pass.

I don't think there are any comparable defensemen available right now and this would almost certainly be a short term thing.

I'm in on a 1 year deal...2 or 3 I'm out.

If we're talking a mil, sure.  Otherwise, I'd rather earmark that money for Nylander and bonus overages.

I think they'd look at that as a deadline target.

Yeah, that would make sense. They need to see all these guys play for a good long while before deciding what's missing up front. Not to mention Nash would need to start training seriously, and that all looks like a mid 2nd half addition, if he even decides to play.

And which defenceman currently available without having to trade away assets would you suggest?

Why aren't we allowed to trade assets?

I don't think he's saying they can't but if there's a good trade out there for a defensemen where the Leafs would have to sacrifice assets they already have...how does that relate to potentially adding Rick Nash? They should make that hypothetical trade regardless of their interest in Nash. The two are almost entirely unconnected.

You don't think cap space is required to pull in a defencemen via trade?  Especially if what we're trading is futures or cheap assets (Kapanen, etc)?

No, it probably would be but in this hypothetical it strikes me as that just being a mitigating factor in what you'd be willing to offer Nash. Unless you're planning on trading for the sort of super-well paid defenseman the Leafs probably don't have the assets to land anyway(certainly not without moving any real money off their roster) then they could probably still fit Nash at some sort of reasonable offer.

I don't think anyone was suggesting they'd have to blow Nash's hair back with an offer, just asking whether or not he'd contribute to the club.
