I think some GMs would be happy to have a player that hates losing.

I think refusing to wear it would be enough of a statement. Throwing it into the stands was a bit much. That being said, he's a kid and kids make stupid decisions.

i agree 100% with OldTimeHockey.

It is understandable under the circumstances that he would be bitteely upset with his country having lost, but losing here is not the issue but rather, how one faces it, and admittedly,  Andersson faced it with great emotion (openly crying). I applaud him because he wasn't just some muy macho guy bottling up and then taking it out by punching someone, or etc.  No.  But...

...here's where it that ends.  Throwing the medal away was a dishonour to his country, for the simple reason that he & his teammates were representatives of the country, not an individual.  It's as though he was making the statement by way of his eroneous action that Sweden's medal doesn't have any value or meaning to it. 

Yes,  Andersson's a young kid.  While one had to feel sorry to see him so upset at the outset, he should thereafter have exhibited better sportsmanship being the Captain.  He didn't.  Therefore he deserves flak for his silly, stupid action.  Lesson, hopefully learned.

I also think those who keep saying Andersson dishonoured his country are a bit much. This was more impulsive than stupid (i.e. he didn't hurl it at someone's head).

Silver medals are the worst.

Wtf? Even guys who simply just took the medals off got suspensions? What a joke.

edit: So 3 of of those 4 guys aren't even eligible for the tournament next year and the 4th (Rasmus Dahlin) will be too busy elsewhere. So that's funny.

edit2: I missed the goalie, Olle Eriksson Ek, who is eligible for next years tournament. So he'll likely be the only player who actually serves a suspension.

edit: Apparently a bunch of those guys aren't even eligible for the tournament next year or in the case of Rasmus Dahlin will obviously be too busy to play, so that's funny.

More a thing for the coaching staff than anything of consequence for the 4 players.

I am in no way a fan of the IIHF, but I am glad they did this.

I understand why it happened, I just don't think it's acceptable behavior in a reasonable society.

Respect for the occasion and civility towards everyone who has worked to make this thing happen isn't a lot to ask for. For some that tournament was the culmination of a life's work and these petulant kids couldn't make it through the medal ceremony without acting out.

The adults deserve even more severe punishment.

This all day long. As much as losing stinks, the behaviour shown showed a complete lack of respect for the officials, the organizers and the other teams in the tournament who would of loved that silver medal.

I think if you're dealing with young kids in a tournament making a ton of money that they're not seeing any of you could maybe try to address this terrible affront with something besides suspensions.

How about taking the medal and tucking it under their Jersey. Technically they would still be wearing it.
