Goaltending conundrum

A lot of fingers being pointed today.  Is it the goalies, Allaire, Wilson?  What a mess Burke has on his hands.  Will be interesting to see what (if anything) he does to address this.

over Reimer or Gus

Why not give them a shot?

Because common sense dictates that you don't throw rookie goalies into the middle of a hectic playoff drive with a ton of pressure on their shoulders.  If they play their way into it, like Reimer did, then fine, but barring some sort of awful injury emergency, it's probably better for them and for the organization not to put that on them.

I understand the desire to see what either can do, but desperately looking for saviors at any position isn't really the best course of action.

I wouldn't go that far... I'm fairly certain the confidence level with either of those guys wouldn't be any higher than with what we currently have. - So what would be the point?

This time last year Reimer had no more experience than Scrivens does now.
He came in and stood on his head for a month.

Reimer has since lost his mojo  ( probably due to the head injury )

Well, then they need to start acting on that realization, because, as we've seen, when they play well as a team, the goaltending becomes somewhat of a non-issue.

Right, but some of the responsibility rests on the goaltender as well. Gus made a fine stop on Kovalchuk but bombed the rest. Its something I just can't understand.

I just watched the highlights from last night's "performance" and was fondly reminded of the 80s when Allan Bester would let in a couple softies, make a couple really good saves to keep his team in the game, then let in a sieve goal from the blue line in OT. Good times.

in 2009 Burke shored up his goaltending at the deadline by picking up Gerber when there was nothing to play for. Now, with the season on the line, will he make a move for a goaltender?

There isn't a doubt in my mind that the goaltending issue will be addressed in some fashion before this Monday at 3pm.

Might not be so easy. It doesn't look like there's much available in terms of goaltending right now. A trade to bring back Giggy would be ideal but he has a year left on his contract so I doubt Colorado is looking to dump him.

You're right. It won't be easy. But I bet Burke is making some calls. He may have to look outside the NHL for some help. I know Turco's name been tossed around in the past. Not sure if he could help this team out on a one year contract.

Yeah I don't see what is so wrong with what Cox wrote.  It's a safe bet now to assume Gustavsson won't be back with the Leafs next season -- why would they?  Cox mentioned that he might be better on another team and regain his form.  Unless you believe that in the next 22 games Gustavsson suddenly shows he's a true #1 goalie and leads the Leafs into the playoffs, how would they ever consider bringing him back?

It's not a single goal, it's a recurring pattern of weak goals in games.  Neither Gustavsson nor Reimer has shown they deserve to be back with the Leafs, the only difference being Reimer has a contract after this season and Gustavsson doesn't, so all things being equal I could see the Leafs hanging onto Reimer, bringing another goalie in and hoping Reimer finds his form again.  The 2nd goalie needs to be someone with some experience that can play if Reimer struggles again next year.

Whatever happens to Jonas will be done with his whole resume in mind, not only how/if he recovers from this ( and that's a legitimate question) but also the fact that without him the Leafs aren't fighting for a playoff spot now.

Reimer's had his own issues to work through but the fact that he's signed shouldn't mean a whole heck of a lot if he fails down the stretch too.

The Leafs were always going to need these guys playing decently to make any kind of post season hay and they've got 20 games to go to figure that out.

If Jonas craps the bed consistently from here on out, yeah, he's probably done but that isn't certain at this point and those making attention grabbing headlines are just selling something, they know better.

I missed the game last night but when i watched the highlights it looked like Gus let in more than one bad goal.

Yeah. (Jeff Note: I was hoping for more then a yeah here, but he's talked about this before anyway. Basically – it was the biggest factor in his signing by a large margin)
