The US cut Alex DeBrincat today. He's 1 point behind Canadian and teammate Taylor Raddysh for the lead in OHL scoring this season.

The good news is that this means Bracco made the team. I'm guessing the final spot likely came down to those two.

Same decision last year went the other way. Not sure why the Us program can only have one small high scoring forward per team (as if scoring is automatic? See DeBrincat's previous tournament injury fizzle), but there you have it.

Carl Grundstrom added the 4th goal shorthanded in Sweden's rout of Denmark 6-1 this afternoon.

Alex Nylander had two markers, and the 2018 draft's version of Erik Karlsson, 16 year old Rasmus Dahlin, picked the corner for his first of the tournament.

I'm watching. Not only because the Leafs don't play again until Wednesday, but because the World Junior Tournament has arguably the best caliber of hockey played on par with the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. There's hitting, everyone is skating fast and giving 110%.

Apparently he didn't really have a good pretournament. Last year's early penalty for spearing vs Canada probably didn't help either.

As for size, the US is actually rolling with a good handful of smaller players, 5'10" and under:
Jack Ahcan, Adam Fox, Jeremy Bracco, Patrick Harper, Clayton Keller.

I also love the tournament, but truth be told, the entertainment value is there for me because of the comparatively large number of mistakes, while at the same time, seeing high amounts of skill on display.

Well, Canada is still pretty good at hockey. The Country can sleep easy.

Team Canada defeats Team Russia by a score of 5-3.  Canada's Dylan Strome led the way with a pair of power play goals, while Matthew Barzal and Nicholas Roy got the others.

The speedy Canadians used that to their advantage, outshooting The Russians 37-17.  Though Canada outplayed Russia, some Russian players weren't convinced that the guys with the Maple Leaf on their jerseys were better:

"They're a pretty fast team," said Sergachev, a Montreal Canadiens prospect who scored the first Russian goal. "But we can beat them all the time because they get weak in the second and third periods. They're just pretty good in the first."

Well, we'll see about that, Mikhail.
