The Toronto Marlies dropped the first of back-to-back games in Grand Rapids on Friday as the Griffins pulled out a 3-2 shootout win. Special teams were the difference as the Griffins scored both their regulation time goals on the power-play, in three opportunities. The Marlies were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Will Acton had his fifth goal of the season for Toronto. Matt Frattin converted on a penalty shot in the third period after being awarded the opportunity when tripped by Grand Rapids defenceman Brendan Smith.
Joe Colborne was the only Marlies player to score in the shootout. Ben Scrivens took the loss in goal.
The two teams meet again at Van Andel Arena on Saturday. The rescheduled date – from its original day of Sunday, December 30 – is a result of the cancellation of the Winter Classic. The original game was to have taken place outdoors at Detroit’s Comerica Park on Sunday.
