-Toronto’s playoff dream officially ended with Buffalo’s 4-2 win over Tampa, which became final just as the Leafs game neared the end of regulation.
-James Reimer was once again named the game’s first star, making 39 saves and giving the Leafs a chance to steal the game from Washington, who outshot Toronto 41-21.
-The players were aware of the situation unfolding in Buffalo. “It’s tough when you’ve got a slim chance of making it, and you’re getting updates throughout your own game,” said defenceman Luke Schenn.
-Joffrey Lupul has compiled 5 goals and 3 assists in the past seven games. “We’ve played really hard over the past two months,” said Lupul. “But over an 82-game season, there’s no flukes. The teams that deserve to get in are the ones that get in. That’s something we’ve got to remember for next year.”
-Alex Ovechkin led all shooters on both teams with 7 shots on goal. His first period tally gives him a total of 23 goals in 23 career games vs. the Leafs.
