About last night…
It was a big 5-3 win over San Jose at the Scotiabank Arena. The Leafs big guns showed up, including Auston Matthews in a return from injury. Here are some facts and figures:
- John Tavares had his third multi-goal game of the season.
- Matthews had his third multi-goal game of the season.
- Patrick Marleau’s goal made him the 25th NHLer to have at least one goal against all NHL teams. Add to that he’s scored a game-winning goal against all but Vegas.
- Mitch Marner has eight assists in the last three games. His 36 points makes him third in the NHL points race. Mikko Rantanen has 42 and Nathan MacKinnon has 41.
- The Leafs next action is Saturday evening at Minnesota, on Hockey Night in Canada.
Coach Mike Babcock, on if he’s had a line that can skate faster than Johnsson-Matthews-Kapanen: “I’d have to think about it, I don’t know for sure. I think we can play so much faster than we’re playing right now and I think we’re going to. We’ve got to get practicing a little bit here and get our legs back and get jumping. Obviously, when we get everyone on deck we’ll be a quick team. Willy can fly too.”
The Leafs power-play can be stunning. I’ll just put this right here, in case you’ve not seen it yet.

Again, in case you missed this gem, it just can’t get any better for Marner. He breaks his stick, drops it mid-ice and races to the bench for another, and flies down the wing to pick up a pretty assist.

Marlies win another…
Toronto picked up a 5-4 overtime win last night in Cleveland. 18 year-old defenceman Rasmus Sandin has 3 goals and 5 points in 10 games.
A nice story is the win gave Head Coach Sheldon Keefe a record of 158 wins through 247 games for a winning percentage of 0.672. He’s now the winningest Marlies coach ever. What a kick-ass record!

The next action for the Marlies is Saturday afternoon against WB/Scranton.
I thought it was Nylander signing…
Anyone else get that loud emergency alert yesterday on their phones around 1:55 PM? I was sure it was the Leafs PR department letting us know William Nylander had signed a big fat contract. No such luck.
Nylander’s future in Toronto…
I’ll just put this right here.
So @FriedgeHNIC tonight on the broadcast:
"The one thing I do believe no matter what happens is that this will be William Nylander's final season as a Maple Leaf."
Which is something.

Update on prospect Ian Scott…
I’ve mentioned goaltender Ian Scott’s fantastic season playing for the Prince Albert Raiders in the WHL. He’s now sporting a 20-1-4 record. He has a 1.53 GAA and a save percentage of .945.
