-Curtis Joseph was named the game’s first star, despite playing only 57 seconds in regulation, plus overtime. Joseph came on in relief of Martin Gerber, who was ejected after Washington’s Brooks Laich scored the tying goal. Gerber – who argued that Laich pushed him into the goal – protested by shooting the puck at the official, an infraction that carries an automatic three-game suspension.
-Joseph made a crucial save in the dying seconds of the third period to preserve the point, plus stopped all eight of Washington’s shots in overtime. The Caps outshot the Leafs 8-0 in OT.
-In providing a dramatic ending to the game, Joseph stopped the NHL’s leading goal-scorer Alex Ovechkin in Washington’s last attempt in the shootout. In the second period, Ovechkin extended his goal total to 51.
-Toronto’s Phil Oreskovic scored his first career NHL goal.
