The Toronto Marlies moved closer to an AHL championship and took a two games to one series lead in the Calder Cup Finals, edging the Texas Stars 2-1 Tuesday night.

Chris Mueller (pictured) – playing against his former team – scored the Marlies’ first goal, converting a cross-ice pass from Andreas Johnsson. The goal came exactly three minutes after Stars centre Sheldon Dries found the net 55 seconds into the second period.

The game-winner was scored by defenceman Calle Rosen, who unleashed a shot from the point that eluded goalie Mike McKenna at the 12:28 mark of the middle frame.

From then on, goaltender Garret Sparks held the fort.  Sparks ended up making 19 saves in the victory.

“I think the forwards are doing a great job establishing possession in the offensive zone and finding the defenceman and giving us the opportunity to make plays so I think it starts with them,” coach Sheldon Keefe said to reporters.

Game 4 of the series is scheduled for Thursday night in Cedar Park, TX.
