Noteworthy:
-Toronto native Luca Caputi scored his first goal in a Leafs uniform, in his first home game with the club (4th game overall). “Since day one, I’ve tried to make this positive for the Maple Leafs,” said Caputi after the game. “I want to prove that I was worth dealing a good player (Alexei Ponikarovsky) to Pittsburgh. It’s a good win for the guys, and a good way to make my homecoming in Toronto.”
-Nikolai Kulemin scored the Leafs’ first overtime goal of the season, giving the team the win. Toronto’s record in OT in 2009-10 is 1-9, not counting their 2-3 record in shootouts.
-Mikhail Grabovski played his first game since injuring his wrist on Jan. 2. Grabovski assisted on Kulemin’s winning goal.
-The Leafs’ were 0-for-3 on the power-play, extending their PPG slump to six games (0-for-28).

Ponikarovsky Traded to Penguins

Alexei Ponikarovsky has been traded from the Maple Leafs to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ponikarovsky has 19 goals and 41 points in 61 games this season, and has played his entire NHL career so far with Toronto (477 games).

In exchange, the Leafs get prospect Luca Caputi, a Toronto native. Caputi, 21, was a fourth-round pick of Pittsburgh in 2007.

Toronto also gets defenceman Martin Skoula, who was included in the trade due to Pittsburgh’s salary cap considerations. Skoula, a 2001 Stanley Cup winner with Colorado, is 30 years old and has 8 points in 33 games this season.
