In a bizarre game that featured a heated third period, the Toronto Marlies escaped from Oklahoma City’s Cox Convention Center with a 6-5 win in overtime. Defenceman Jake Gardiner provided the heroics for the visitors with just under 28 seconds remaining in the extra period.

With the Marlies cruising to a 4-0 first period lead and chasing Barons starting goalie Olivier Roy from the game, a fourth straight victory squad seemed imminent. Mike Zigomanis’ power-play goal at 7:10 of the third period gave Toronto a comfortable cushion heading into the final minutes of regulation.

Off The Post: Sundin and Sakic – New Hall-of-Famers share Quebec City bond

It’s been over seventeen years since Quebec City was home to a professional hockey team, back when the Nordiques played in the rink once known as Le Colisee.

For two of this year’s Hockey Hall of Fame inductees – Mats Sundin and Joe Sakic – the memories of wearing the power blue jerseys adorned with the fleur-de-lis are still vivid.

“I remember my first practice,” Sundin told a large media gathering on the morning of Monday’s induction ceremony. “There was Joe Sakic at the time. He was also young but he was also an established superstar in the league. Now we’re being inducted together. It makes it very special.”

Hockey Hall of Fame inducts Rick Jeanneret – Sabres broadcaster

Special guest column by Mike Augello, a.k.a. “Mike In Buffalo”

Rick Jeanneret is one of my favorite sports announcers. As someone who has listened or watched hockey games since the 1970’s, his unique style made Sabres games enjoyable even for someone who was not a fan of the club, I’ve always been entertained by Rick’s emotional call of the game, his exciting banter when a fight occurred and his exaltation when Buffalo scored a goal.

Everyone remembers his “May Day” call in celebration of Brad May’s series clinching goal over the Bruins in 1993, but the moments that I recall are when he celebrated a Pat LaFontaine goal near Christmas time one year with “Fa-la-la-la-la…la-La-fontaine”, his frequently used “top shelf where Mama hides the cookies” tag line or his high pitched blow by blow of brawls between Tie Domi and Rob Ray or the infamous brawl between Garth Snow-Steve Shields in the 1997 Playoffs.

Having access to the NHL Center Ice package in recent years has given me access to the various voices around the league and many of younger generation are restrained and try not to let emotion and excitement creep into their call, which bores me to tears. In my mind, Rick rightly belongs in upper echelon of hockey play by play men that include Danny Gallivan, Bob Cole, Dan Kelly, Mike Lange, Jim Gordon, Sam Rosen, Doc Emrick and Joe Bowen and great deserves the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award he is receiving tonight.
