Inside the CWHL – Family Ties

When you think of hockey family bloodlines, names like Hull, Esposito and Sutter come to mind.

While the players in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League aren’t as famous as Bobby and his son Brett, or Tony and his brother Phil, or any of the six Sutter siblings, a handful of them are daughters, or sisters, of elite-level athletes. Gillian Apps, Meghan Mikkelson and Hilary Knight – each of whom played in the 2010 Olympic gold medal game – are all grateful for the support they found from their respective parents, brothers and sisters.

Apps of the Brampton Thunder has the most prolific name. Her grandfather Syl won three Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs in the 40’s and is an honoured member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, while her father Syl Jr. played 727 career NHL games, mostly with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jake Gardiner recalled

Defenceman Jake Gardiner has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

Gardiner, 22, has spent most of this season with the Marlies, registering 31 points in 43 games. He played two games with the Leafs at the beginning of the season in January before being assigned to the AHL. During the lockout, Gardiner suffered a concussion while playing a game against the Rochester Americans.

Seven days ago, a frenzy was caused on Twitter when Gardiner’s agent sent a message with the hashtag “FreeJakeGardiner”

Korbinian Holzer has been returned to the Marlies to make room for Gardiner. Holzer did not have to clear waivers prior to being sent down.

March 14 – Gardiner NHL delay not based on lack of readiness

TMLfans.ca Stats Plus – Mar. 18

Stats that make you go hmmmmm:

  • Among active players, the two worst players on shootouts are the Leafs Clarke MacArthur and the Blues Patrick Berglund, both of whom have gone 0-10 in their careers. The best is an unlikely candidate in Washington’s Matt Hendricks who is 66.6 % by scoring on eight of 12 attempts.
  • It may be somewhat surprising that among coaches who have been behind the bench for 300 or more games, three of the top four winning % belong to active skippers. First is Dan Bylsma (.663 %), then Bruce Boudreau (.662 %), followed by Scotty Bowman (.657 %) and then Todd McClellan. (.649 %)
  • Tampa Bay’s game with Carolina on Saturday was interesting for the Lightning’s rookies. In the first period, Tyler Johnson scored his first NHL goal with assists to Alex Killorn and Cory Conacher. Both Killorn and Conacher scored their first NHL goals earlier this season. Then, a period later, Ondrej Palat got his first NHL goal and of course, Tyler Johnson got one of the assists.

How frustrating was last night’s shootout result for Leafs fans?

Goaltender James Reimer entered the skills competition portion of the game versus the Winnipeg Jets with a paltry save percentage of .619 (13-for-21) over 8 shootout appearances in his career. He stopped 8 Jets shooters in the epic that went ten rounds – the longest in club history – vaulting the percentage to .677.

And Toronto still lost.

Defenceman Zach Bogosian finally sealed the Winnipeg victory as the Jets edged the Leafs 5-4. The win moved the Jets into the Southeast Division lead over Carolina, and third place in the Eastern Conference.

Leafs-Jets pre-game

(Joffrey Lupul returns to Leafs lineup)

After missing the past 25 games with a forearm injury, Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul returns to the lineup as Toronto hosts the Winnipeg Jets. “If I didn’t think I could play the full game I wouldn’t be playing,” said Lupul who was hurt by an errant shot off the stick of teammate Dion Phaneuf in the Leafs’ third game of the year on January 23. “I’m ready to play and I’m confident that I can make a difference.”

Lupul has fared well against the Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise over his career, collecting 10 goals and 18 points in 14 career games played.

Based on Friday’s practice lines Lupul, will have Nazem Kadri and Nikolai Kulemin as linemates. “I’m excited (at the prospect of playing with Lupul,” said Kadri. “He’s a great player. I know he’s going to fit in great.

“We can relate to each other, he was a seventh-overall pick as well. He battled through some big-time adversity as well. We get along great and I think it’s going to translate on the ice.”
