Liles place on injured reserved with concussion symptoms

Liles
Maple Leafs defenceman John-Michael Liles has been placed on injured reserve, and is out of the lineup indefinitely with “concussion-like” symptoms.

Liles sustained a severe, legal hit from Buffalo’s Paul Gaustad in the Leafs victory over the Sabres on December 22, and remained to finish the game. He did not play in the team’s matchup against the New York Islanders the following day.

The injury comes in the wake of a growing epidemic of concussions in the NHL. Liles joins teammate Colby Armstrong as well as high-profile stars Sidney Crosby and Chris Pronger – among many others – who are out of their respective lineups due to concussions.

In 34 games this year Liles has 4 goals and 21 points.

Burke defends Wilson extension

Brian Burke

Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke addressed a group of reporters gathered at Air Canada Centre to discuss the contract extension given to coach Ron Wilson.

“I think it’s important that they players know that the coach isn’t going anywhere,” said Burke. “When the coach goes into the cage, he needs the chair and the whip, not just one. It’s not enough to just be the coach for the rest of the season, in my opinion.

Wilson announced the news of his signing on Christmas morning using his Twitter account: @coachrw63
