Recap:
The Leafs broke out of their scoring slump Tuesday night at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise Florida. Unfortunately it was just in time to see their season all but die at the hands of the Panthers, who swept the season series 4-0.

Since the lockout, the Leafs and the Panthers were the only two teams not to advance to the playoffs. But it looks like Florida swampland will provide a suitable resting place for the Buds as they will have the honour all to themselves after this year.

Randy Carlyle couldn`t have asked for any more from his club. Except maybe a goal.

The defence-oriented coach guided his Leafs team to a shutout of the Philadelphia Flyers – the second-highest scoring team in the NHL – on Saturday night.

Unfortunately, a series of goal posts went against Toronto, leading to a scoreless stalemate after 60 minutes of regulation, then overtime. The end result was a 1-0 Flyers win which was sealed when Claude Giroux simply outclassed Leafs goalie Jonas Gustavsson in the shootout.

Recap:
Welcome to the Air Canada Centre, Randy Carlyle.

In his first home game as coach of the Maple Leafs, the one-time Norris Trophy winner caught a glimpse of how poorly his team’s defence matches up versus an opponent other than the last place team in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto’s home losing skid reached six games with a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. Compounding their increasingly futile playoff quest was a three-point game between Carolina and Washington, two of the teams that the Leafs are chasing in the standings.

Recap:

New bench boss Randy Carlyle did what former coach Ron Wilson couldn’t in the previous six games – get his team to settle down and win.

The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 in a tight-checking affair that featured something else the Leafs were lacking in the last few weeks, solid goaltending.

For Leaf fortunes to change it really was a simple plan that took effect; something that mysteriously disappeared for the most part in recent games, checking and goaltending. Is this the Carlyle effect? He certainly had the bench humming, making play corrections on the fly with his old-school analog pen and paper, and the Leafs seemed to embrace the change of guard.
