Noteworthy:
-The three players acquired in Sunday’s trades: J.S. Giguere, Dion Phaneuf and Fredrik Sjostrom, were named the game’s three stars in order.
-Giguere became only second goalie in team history to record a shutout in his Leafs debut. Ed Belfour accomplished the feat on Oct. 10, 2002 in a win at Pittsburgh. “The guys played well, they blocked some shots and they cleared the front of the net,” said Giguere of his teammates. “The guys were there for me. Altogether it was a really solid game for us tonight.”
-Phaneuf had 24:21 of ice time with 4 shots on goal, 6 hits, and a fight against the Devils’ Colin White. “It was definitely a special game for me and my career,” said Phaneuf. “The fans were great. It was a really exciting game to be a part of.”
-Sjostrom assisted on the opening goal of the game by Kulemin and finished with 2 shots and 4 hits in 16:56 of ice time.”I felt great out there for being the first game. I wasn’t really nervous, I was just really excited. It’s just a great vibe, a great atmosphere. Hopefully we can keep this going,” said Sjostrom.
