Noteworthy:
-The Leafs scored the opening goal of the game for just the third time in 20 outings this season. Toronto vaulted to a 3-0 lead, but could not hold it.
-Ian White scored with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Leafs up 5-4. The goal looked like it would hold up as the game-winner, which would have been redemption for the defenceman. Earlier in the third period, White was called for a high-sticking double-minor on Carolina’s Tom Kostopoulos. The ensuing power-play allowed the Hurricanes to tie the game. Replays showed that Kostopoulos was actually clipped by his teammate Stephane Yelle.
-Jonas Gustavsson participated in his first career shootout. Phil Kessel took his first shootout attempt for the Leafs (unsuccessful).
