Saturday news: Mayers, Finger to suit up against Capitals

The Leafs will make some changes to their opening night lineup when they face Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals this evening at Verizon Center (7pm ET, CBC, AM 640). Forward Jamal Mayers and defenceman Jeff Finger will play their first games of the year. The most likely candidates to be replaced are Jay Rosehill and Garnet Exelby.

Montreal’s all-star defenceman Andrei Markov will miss the next four months of the season after suffering torn tendons in his left ankle. The injury occurred in the third period of Thursday’s game against the Maple Leafs.

The Penguins raised their Stanley Cup banner in their home opener, capping off the celebration with a win over the New York Rangers. In a pair of games played in Europe, Florida edged Chicago in a shootout in Finland, while St. Louis got past Detroit in Sweden.

Friday news: Leafs drop spirited season opener in OT.

The Leafs kicked off their 2009-10 season Thursday night with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Matt Stajan scored twice with Alexei Ponikarovsky also connecting for Toronto.

Josh Gorges fired the winner past Vesa Toskala with less than 13 seconds remaining in the extra period to seal the victory for the visiting Habs.

Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek made physical impact against his former team, scrapping with Travis Moen, but also taking a total of 15 minutes in penalty minutes and watching from the penalty box on a pair of Canadiens’ power-play goals.

In other NHL games, the Flames survived a comeback attempt from the Canucks in Calgary’s home opener, Alex Ovechkin got off to a flying start for the Capitals, and Joe Sakic had his number retired in Colorado, prior to the Avalanche’s victory.

Thursday news: Let the puck drop!

The NHL’s 92nd regular season opens in four venues today, including Air Canada Centre where the 2009-10 edition of the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens (7pm ET, CBC, AM 640). Vesa Toskala will make the start in goal, while defenceman Mike Komisarek plays his first game against his former team after signing with the Leafs as a free agent on July 1.

Mats Sundin refers to Toronto as his second home after announcing his retirement, two decades after being a first overall NHL draft pick by the Quebec Nordiques. Sundin leaves the game as the NHL’s all-time leading Swedish scorer, and franchise leader for the Leafs in goals and points.

Judge Redfield Baum throws out both bids by Jim Balsillie and the NHL to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes, but the ruling against Balsillie “with prejudice” effectively ends his bid to bring the team to Hamilton.
