Weekend news: Kaberle trade window expires – Farewell Teeder

The summer window of opportunity for Leafs GM Brian Burke to trade Tomas Kaberle expired on Saturday, meaning that the veteran defenceman will be in Toronto’s lineup on opening night. Kaberle, 31, enters his 11th season with the team that drafted him in 1996.

Tributes have been written in honour of five-time Stanley Cup champion and Hall-of-Famer Ted “Teeder” Kennedy, who passed away in Port Colborne, Ont. on Friday at age 83.

Leafs legend Ted Kennedy passes away.

Hockey Hall of Fame legend Ted “Teeder” Kennedy died Friday morning at his home in Port Colborne, Ontario at the age of 83, due to congestive heart failure. A former Leafs captain, Kennedy skated in front of sellout crowds at Maple Leaf Gardens in the 40′s and 50′s to the chants of “Come on, Teeder!”

Kennedy was a five-time Stanley Cup champion and won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player in 1955. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Kennedy family at this time.

Leafs sign MacDonald; trade Pogge

The Maple Leafs have signed goaltender Joey MacDonald to a one-year contract, the club announced on Monday. “We are pleased to be able to add a goaltender of Joey’s caliber to our roster,” said president and general manager Brian Burke. “He brings experience and character to our organization and gives us depth at the goaltending position.”

Last season MacDonald, 29, posted a record of 14-26-6 record with a .901 save percentage and a 3.37 goals against average with the New York Islanders.

Earlier in the day, the Leafs traded goaltender Justin Pogge to Anaheim in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2011.

TSN reports that the Leafs will trade goaltender Justin Pogge to Anaheim in exchange for a conditional draft pick. The pick can reportedly improve based on the goaltender’s play.

Pogge, 23, has posted a record of 71-56-11 in three career seasons with the AHL Toronto Marlies, but has never lived up to the enormous expectations of becoming the Leafs “goaltender of the future”. In seven starts for the Leafs last year, he went 1-4-1.

Originally a third-round pick of the Leafs in 2004, Pogge backstopped Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2005 World Junior Championships in Vancouver.

Wednesday news: Eakins named Marlies coach

Dallas Eakins was introduced as the new head coach of the Toronto Marlies on Tuesday morning. Eakins, 42, was a journeyman during his NHL playing days, suiting up for 10 different teams including the Leafs. A former Marlies assistant to Paul Maurice, Eakins takes over from Greg Gilbert, whose contract was not renewed.

Meanwhile Brian Burke says things are quiet on the Kaberle trade front, while also suggesting that soon-to-be-dealt goalie Justin Pogge check his voice mail.

Around the NHL, outspoken Jeremy Roenick is set to call it a career, while it looks like the Phoenix Coyotes will be auctioned off on September 10.
