Tuesday news: Habs welcome Jacques Martin

Jacques Martin was officially introduced as the new head coach of the Montreal Canadiens on Monday in a move that surprised many. Leaving his post as GM of the Florida Panthers, Martin becomes the first head coach with previous NHL experience to be hired by the Habs in 17 years (Jacques Demers, 1992).

The Stanley Cup Final resumes tonight at Mellon Arena, as the Penguins attempt to get back into the series, trailing two games to none (8pm, CBC). Evgeni Malkin escaped a one-game suspension and will be in the lineup, having had his instigator penalty from Game Two rescinded.

Jim Balsillie has filed an official relocation application with the NHL for the Phoenix Coyotes.

Monday news: Nieuwendyk takes Stars’ GM post; Wings up 2-0

Joe Nieuwendyk, who spent this past season as Leafs special assistant to the general manager, will be formally introduced as the general manager of the Dallas Stars this afternoon. The three-time Stanley Cup champion has also served in assistant management roles with the Florida Panthers and Team Canada.

Despite being outplayed for long stretches of the game, the Detroit Red Wings took a commanding two games to none lead in the Stanley Cup Final, defeating Pittsburgh 3-1, an identical score to the opening game. Pittsburgh appeared to catch a lucky break when Wings defenceman Brad Stuart knocked the puck into his own goal for the game’s first goal. But Sidney Crosby and Bill Guerin found themselves victim to the proverbial “goalie’s best friend” – the goal post – on numerous occasions.

The series shifts to Mellon Arena for the next two games, on Tuesday and Thursday.
