Thursday news: Leafs play spoiler; will dress Hanson on Friday

The Leafs, while mathemetically eliminated from playoff contention, showed their never-quit work ethic in a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night. Jamal Mayers, Lee Stempniak and Ian White had the goals for Toronto. Newly-acquired forward Christian Hanson will make his debut with the team on Friday, in the second game of the home-and-home series at Wachovia Center.

Toronto was fined $500,000 by the NHL for paying out a signing bonus which violated the terms of the CBA when the club signed Jonas Frogren last summer. The Leafs also forfeit the fourth-round draft pick that was acquired from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline in the same deal that brought Olaf Kolzig and Jamie Heward to Toronto.

Leafs fined for mishandling Frogren contract

The Maple Leafs were fined $500,000 by the NHL for a violation of the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. The offence occurred as a result of a $755,000 signing bonus paid to Frogren, part of which was believed to get the defenceman out of his contract with his Swedish Elite League team.

“The Toronto Maple Leafs acknowledge and apologize for the error of judgment,” said president and general manager Brian Burke via a press release. “The Club accepts the punishment handed down by the League and will not be commenting further on the matter.”
