The Maple Leafs will be looking to shake their three-game losing streak when they host the Atlanta Thrashers this evening (7:30pm, TSN, AM640). Toronto has been outscored by a lopsided margin of 16-4 over the losing skid. Defenceman Luke Schenn skated briefly with the team yesterday, and is expected to return to the lineup in about a week.
At the World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa, Canada found another gear and potted three third-period goals on the way to a 5-1 win over Germany. The host country faces the United States on New Year’s Eve in a showdown for the top seed in the pool and an automatic berth in the semi-final.
In other NHL news, the Habs won their 3,000th game in franchise history with a victory over the Florida Panthers.

Defending Hart and Art Ross trophy winner Alex Ovechkin had a pair of goals in Washington’s 4-1 victory over the Maple Leafs at Verizon Center on Sunday. The loss marked the third straight defeat for Toronto, who now head home to face Atlanta on Tuesday evening. Matt Stajan is expected to miss at least a week with an eye injury suffered when he was struck with a practice soccer ball.
At the World Junior Championship, Canada manhandled Kazakhstan by a score 15-0, leaving critics to question whether there are too many teams in this tournament.
The Toronto Marlies won their third straight game, defeating the Manitoba Moose 4-1 at Ricoh Coliseum. Justin Pogge earned the victory in goal while Staffan Kronwall had a goal and an assist.
