Leafs show no spirit in St. Louis

The Maple Leafs were crushed 7-3 by the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center in pre-season action on Wednesday night. Toronto had a dismal first period in which they gave up five goals, including the opening marker just 11 seconds into the game. The game was all but decided by the 11:42 mark, at which point the Blues had jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

The game saw plenty of fisticuffs towards the end of the third period, instigated by the Leafs’ Ryan Hollweg’s hit on a Blues player from behind. Toronto was assessed 45 penalty minutes in the game, 36 of which came in the final twenty minutes. Hollweg had three fighting majors while the Blues’ Cam Janssen finished with 39 penalty minutes.

Mikhail Grabovski, Anton Stralman and Niklas Hagman had the Leafs goals.

Toronto’s exhibition season continues with a home-and-home series against Detroit beginning on Friday at Joe Louis Arena.

Forward Lines: Hagman-Mitchell-Steen, Tlusty–Stajan-Earl, Devereaux-Grabovski-Rogers, Hollweg-Mayers-Bell

Defence pairings: Schenn-Van Ryn, Stralman-Frogren, White-Petiot
Goaltenders: Joseph (L 21:56, 6 SV, 6 GA ), Pogge (38:04, 13 SV, 1 GA)
