The Leafs are one game over .500 for the month of October, having won some close games – not through finesse and pretty passing plays – but through grit and hard work. The team prepares to host the Rangers tomorrow night.
Senators’ captain Daniel Alfredsson has signed a four-year deal that will keep him in Ottawa for the rest of his career.

The Leafs earned their first shootout win in four attempts this season, winning an entertaining game in New Jersey on Wednesday by a score of 6-5. The back-and-forth game saw the lead change on three occassions, generating ten goals in a matchup that was not predicted to produce a lot of offence.
Matt Stajan led the way with two goals and an assist. Alex Steen and Jamal Mayers both scored their first goal of the year while Alexei Ponikarovsky also found the net. The Leafs were 3-for-4 on the power-play, with two of those goals coming within a 3:18 stretch in the second period in which they scored three times to take a 3-2 lead.
Tomas Kaberle and Niklas Hagman both scored in the shootout.
Toronto’s next game is Saturday when they host the New York Rangers.

Matt Stajan and Mike Van Ryn scored the goals for Toronto. The Leafs are in New Jersey on Wednesday to face the Devils.

Dueling rookies: Leafs host Lightning
October 28, 2008 by RobDM

The Maple Leafs host the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight (7:30pm TSN, AM 640) in a matchup of the first and fifth-overall picks in last summer’s NHL draft: Steven Stamkos and Luke Schenn.
An exclamation point to Schenn’s stellar freshman campaign was placed yesterday when the annoucement was made that the 18-year-old defenceman will be staying with the Leafs as a full-time roster player. On the other hand, Stamkos has struggled in Tampa, with the forward going pointless in seven games with limited ice time.
In other hockey news, the Ottawa Senators ended their losing skid while in Napanee the trial of David Frost continues.
