Sunday news: Leafs burn out in loss to Flames

The Leafs 52-second fizzle in the second period in which they gave up a pair of goals sent the team on the way to its second consecutive Alberta loss as Toronto fell 3-1 to the Calgary Flames.

Mikhail Grabovski and Wayne Primeau both left the game with undisclosed injuries. Forward John Mitchell, who has missed the past 19 games with a knee injury, will be available for the Leafs next game on Tuesday against Florida.

At Ricoh Coliseum, the Marlies defeated Milwaukee 3-2 in a shootout.

Thursday news: Leafs drilled by Oilers

The Maple Leafs had a lethargic outing their final game of 2009, losing 3-1 in Edmonton, ending the Oilers seven-game losing streak. Patrick O’Sullivan had a pair of goals as Pat Quinn earned his first coaching victory against his former team.

Team Canada’s Men’s Olympic hockey roster was unveiled as executive director Steve Yzerman aims to win a gold medal on home ice in Vancouver. Scott Niedermayer was named captain, with Chris Pronger, Sidney Crosby and Jarome Iginla as alternates.

The Toronto Marlies ended their losing skid with a 3-2 win over Peoria at Ricoh Coliseum.

Monday news: Leafs have a White Christmas in Pittsburgh

Ian White’s goal with 82 seconds remaining in regulation broke a third period deadlock, giving the Leafs a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday night. The goal came less than a minute after the Penguins’ Mike Rupp scored the equalizer, at which point the game appeared headed to overtime.

Vesa Toskala made 21 saves in the win, in his first start since being pulled on Dec. 18 against Buffalo.

Toronto embarks on a Western road swing beginning on Wednesday when they take on the Edmonton Oilers.

At Ricoh Coliseum, the Marlies were crushed 7-0 by Lake Erie in AHL action.

Sunday news: Leafs fall in overtime, again

For the second straight home game the Leafs outshot their opponents only to lose in overtime. Toronto’s 49 shots on goal weren’t enough to defeat the Montreal Canadiens, who skated away from Air Canada Centre with a 3-2 win on Saturday night thanks to Andrei Kostitsyn’s winning goal.

Toronto’s record in overtime/shootout games is a pathetic 1-9 this season.

The Leafs are in action tonight at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh (7pm, Leafs TV, AM 640).

Tuesday news: Bah humbug – Leafs gift-wrap win for Sabres in OT

The Leafs were minutes away from ending their losing streak against the Buffalo Sabres, but defensive lapses in both the third period and overtime resulted in a 3-2 defeat for Toronto. Derek Roy scored the winner in the extra frame after being uncovered in front of the net, on what head coach Ron Wilson labelled as a “peewee” level mistake.

Viktor Stalberg had his second goal in 3 games since his recall from the Marlies last week. Ian White also scored for Toronto.

Sabres goalie Ryan Miller made 34 saves in the win. Buffalo has now defeated Toronto nine straight times.

The Leafs next game is Wednesday in Long Island, against the New York Islanders.

Sunday news: Gustavsson blanks Bruins

Leafs goalie Jonas Gustavsson recorded his first NHL shutout in Toronto’s 2-0 win over Boston on Saturday night. The win was a measure of revenge for the Leafs, who lost twice to the Bruins earlier this month by a combined score of 12-4.

Tomas Kaberle ended a 23-game goal scoring drought with a tally that held up as the game-winner. Jason Blake also scored for the Leafs.

In AHL action, Troy Brodie’s hat trick led the Marlies to a 4-3 win over Wilkes-Barre.
