Tuesday news: Leafs face Devils

In their final road game of the season the Leafs visit Prudential Centre to take on the New Jersey Devils (7pm, SportsNet, AM 640). Toronto is trying to rebound from back-to-back clunkers against Philadelphia and Montreal, while the Devils have won two in a row following a six-game losing streak.

Ron Wilson and Brian Burke will be at the helm for Team USA for both the 2009 World Championships and 2010 Olympics. Leaf rookie Luke Schenn is eyeing a for Team Canada when it takes to the ice in Switzerland at the Worlds in a couple of weeks.

Around the NHL, the Habs have lost the services of defencemen Mathieu Schneider and Andrei Markov, both of whom were injured in last Saturday’s game in Toronto.

At the Womens World Championships, Canada spanked Sweden 7-0.

Monday news: Brad May to set milestone, two days from now

Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun writes that Leafs coach Ron Wilson purposely sat Brad May in a February game to guarantee that the veteran forward would play his 1,000th career game against the Buffalo Sabres. The meeting between May and his old teammates takes place Wednesday at Air Canada Centre.

Around the NHL the Panthers earned an important two points against the Penguins as Florida’s Keith Ballard engaged in fisticuffs against Sidney Crosby. The Red Wings put a dagger into the Wild’s playoff hopes with a late third-period game-winner off the stick of Marian Hossa.

At the Women’s World Championships in Finland, Canada faces Sweden for the first time since the red-and-white were upset at the Four Nations Cup. The winner of today’s matchup plays for gold; the loser is destined to play for bronze.

In OHL playoff action, the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors pulled to within 2-1 of the Brampton Battalion, while the London Knights took a commanding 3-0 series lead against the Saginaw Spirit in their conference semi-final series.

Sunday news: Leafs crushed by Habs

The Maple Leafs were no match for their long-time rivals the Montreal Canadiens, falling 6-2 to the bleu-blanc-et-rouge before a sellout crowd at ACC on Saturday night. For the second time in as many nights, Toronto gave up the first 4 goals of the game. Midway through the third period, ex-Hab Mikhail Grabovski was assessed a misconduct penalty as a result of a boarding infraction on Montreal defenceman Andrei Markov.

Around the NHL, the Carolina Hurricanes clinched a playoff spot with a win over Pittsburgh, while Edmonton kept their faint post-season hopes alive by defeating the Vancouver Canucks.

The Toronto Marlies completed a mini-sweep of the Manitoba Moose with a 3-2 win, keeping pace with the Syracuse Crunch in the North Division playoff race.

Saturday news: Leafs shelled in Philly; face Habs tonight

An atrocious first period was the Leafs’ undoing as they fell behind 5-0 after twenty minutes of play, on route to an 8-5 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at Wachovia Center. Goalie Martin Gerber was pulled at the 8:07 mark of the first period, but backup Curtis Joseph fared no better, allowing 2 goals on five shots. Gerber was reinserted for the second and third periods, officially taking the loss in goal.

The Leafs face the resurgent Habs at Air Canada Centre tonight (7:00pm, CBC, AM 640). This morning, Tyler Bozak was officially introduced to the Toronto media, having agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the organization.

Around the NHL, the hockey community mourns the loss of the fiance of the Canucks’ Taylor Pyatt, who lost her life in an auto accident in Jamaica. Pyatt has taken an indefinite leave from his team. On the ice, the Flames’ slumping ways continued with a shutout loss to the Minnesota Wild.

In AHL action, the Marlies regained the final playoff spot in the North Division with an important 3-1 victory in Manitoba against the Moose. The two teams meet later today at MTS Centre.

Friday news: Gerber to start the rest of the way

Leafs head coach Ron Wilson has named Martin Gerber as his starting goalie for the remainder of the season. Gerber returns from his three-game suspension when Toronto visits Philadelphia this evening (7:00pm, SportsNet, AM 640). Christian Hanson will make his Leafs debut, playing on a line with Jason Blake and John Mitchell.

Toronto has signed University of Denver prospect Tyler Bozak, according to reports in both the Toronto Star and SportsNet.ca.

Around the NHL, the Habs vaulted into seventh place in the East with a win over the Islanders. The Flames and Canucks have clinched playoff spots, but the Oilers appear to be reeling.

Thursday news: Leafs play spoiler; will dress Hanson on Friday

The Leafs, while mathemetically eliminated from playoff contention, showed their never-quit work ethic in a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night. Jamal Mayers, Lee Stempniak and Ian White had the goals for Toronto. Newly-acquired forward Christian Hanson will make his debut with the team on Friday, in the second game of the home-and-home series at Wachovia Center.

Toronto was fined $500,000 by the NHL for paying out a signing bonus which violated the terms of the CBA when the club signed Jonas Frogren last summer. The Leafs also forfeit the fourth-round draft pick that was acquired from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline in the same deal that brought Olaf Kolzig and Jamie Heward to Toronto.

Gordie Howe made his first public appearance since the passing of his wife Colleen.
