Saturday news: Leafs lose in OT to Devils, face Canucks on Hockey Day

The Maple Leafs scored a pair of third period goals to salvage a point in the standings, but wound up losing 5-4 in overtime to New Jersey on Friday night. Travis Zajac scored the game winner on the power-play after Luke Schenn was forced into taking a penalty following a turnover.

Leafs defenceman Carl Gunnarsson scored his first career NHL goal.

It’s CBC’s annual Hockey Day in Canada and the Leafs host the Vancouver Canucks at 7pm ET. Ottawa and Montreal faceoff at 2pm while Edmonton and Calgary play at 10pm ET.

In AHL action the Toronto Marlies lost 6-3 to Lake Erie on Friday. The team is home to the Rochester Americans at 4pm today.

Thursday news: Mayers, Exelby want out of Toronto

Leafs skaters Jamal Mayers and Garnet Exelby have requested to be traded out of Toronto. “I haven’t had a chance to win yet, so I’d certainly like that opportunity,” said Mayers following practice yesterday.

General manager Brian Burke is expected to be quite active as the March 3 trade deadline approaches and the team’s fate as a non-playoff participant all but decided.

At Ricoh Coliseum, former Leaf and Marlie Justin Pogge had the last laugh against his former team, backstopping the San Antonio Rampage to a 4-3 shootout victory.

Sunday news: Leafs fizzle at the end of road trip

The Leafs’ five-game road trip ended with a whimper as they work blanked 2-0 by the Florida Panthers on Saturday. Tomas Vokoun made 39 saves in the shutout, and Toronto native Kenndal McArdle scored his first career NHL goal.

Over five games, the Leafs went 1-4, and were outscored 18-10.

At Ricoh Coliseum, the Marlies defeated Hamilton 4-3 on the strength of a three-point night from Christian Hanson.

Friday news: Costly penalties lead to Leafs OT loss

Leafs forward Alexei Ponikarovsky took a pair of third period minor penalties, contributing to Tampa Bay’s comeback and eventual 3-2 overtime win on Thursday night. Ponikarovsky was called for boarding late in the third period giving the Lightning the opportunity to tie the score – which they did – on a goal by Ryan Malone. The Toronto forward was then returned immediately to the penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct after overheated protests to the referees.

Toronto took a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty in overtime, allowing Martin St. Louis to win the game with under 10 seconds remaining in the extra session.

Tuesday news: Kessel saves Leafs from collapse

Phil Kessel picked an opportune time to end his eight-game scoring drought, finding the net late in the third period to give the Leafs a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators on Monday night at Sommet Center. The Leafs had built up a 3-0 lead over the first half of the game, only to watch it evaporatae as the Predators rallied to tie the score.

Each member of the Ponikarovsky-Stajan-Hagman line had a goal, while goallie Jonas Gustavsson made 27 saves.

The Leafs are in Atlanta this evening to take on Ilya Kovalchuk and the Thrashers (7pm ET, Leafs TV, AM 640).

Friday news: Leafs blank Flyers; travel to DC to face Caps

Tyler Bozak’s first career NHL goal was a highlight reel tally, and held up as the game-winner in the Leafs’ 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. Vesa Toskala made 38 saves in the shutout,.

Toronto travels to Washington to face the Capitals this evening (7pm ET, TSN, AM 640).
