Monday news: Fleury back for Game Six

Despite being pulled in Game #5 in losing to Detroit on Saturday, Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury will be in goal tomorrow night as Pittsburgh tries to avoid losing in the Stanley Cup Final for a second straight year.

Also, all eyes will be in an Arizona courtroom tomorrow for Judge Redfield T. Baum’s ruling on the Phoenix Coyotes relocation issue, although the losing side is expected to appeal the decision, regardless of the outcome.

Sunday news: Dominant Wings within one game of Stanley

The Detroit Red Wings crushed the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-0 on Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena to come within one game of clinching their fifth Stanley Cup title in 12 years. After a sluggish start, the home team received a boost by killing an early penalty, and never looked back. Special teams – which had been Detroit’s nemesis for the series – came up big for the Red Wings as they converted three consecutive power-play chances.

Detroit was bolstered by the return of Pavel Datsyuk to the lineup. The star sniper had been out since May 19 with a left foot injury, and made an immediate impact with a pair of assists. Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was pulled in favour of Sebastien Caron after the fifth goal. The Penguins lost their composure with the game out of reach, taking several chippy penalties in the third period.

Game #6 of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at Mellon Arena.

Around the NHL, Toronto Argonauts co-owners Howard Sokolowski and David Cynnamon emerge as potential buyers for the beleaguered Phoenix Coyotes. The relocation issue is before the courts again on Tuesday.

In AHL Calder Cup action the Hershey Bears took a two games to one lead over the Manitoba Moose in the final series.

Saturday news: So long Gibby; Marlies part ways with Gilbert

The Toronto Marlies officially announced that they will not renew the contract of head coach Greg Gilbert, who coached the Maple Leafs’ affiliate for three straight seasons. “Greg has been a valuable and loyal member of our organization,” said Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke.

Gilbert coached the Marlies to their strongest playoff run in team history, advancing all the way to the Calder Cup semi-finals in 2008. Several players such as John Mitchell, Jiri Tlusty, Jamie Sifers and Tim Stapleton have parlayed his coaching lessons into NHL appearances.

The Detroit Red Wings will get a much-needed boost in the pivotal Game Five of the Stanley Cup Final tonight at Joe Louis Arena (8pm, CBC). Hart trophy nominee Pavel Datsyuk, who has been out with an injured foot, will make his first appearance in the series. Datsyuk’s presence in the lineup should relieve some of the added pressure that has been placed on star forward Henrik Zetterberg.

Friday news: Will Toronto bid for 2nd team leave a legacy?

The Toronto Legacy Group, led by senior player alumnus and legend Herb Carnegie, unveiled a proposal this morning to bring a second NHL team to Toronto. The team would play in Downsview Arena – north of the downtown core but still easily accessible – and would be known as the Legacy.

Given the obstacles that RIM magnate Jim Balsillie currently faces with his proposal to move a team to Hamilton, and given the potential infringement on the Leafs territory, the group faces a monumental challenge to bring the proposal to reality.

And no – you’re not the first one to crack a joke speculating on whether the team’s first signing would be “the goalie from St. Louis whose first name is Manny”.

The momentum has shifted in the Stanley Cup Final as the Penguins skated circles around – or rather through – the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, taking Game Four 4-2 to even the series at two games apiece. Pittsburgh exploded for three highlight reel goals within a span of just over five minutes in the second period, exploiting holes in a once impenetrable Wings defence that now just looks ragged.

Game Five is set for Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Thursday news: Schenns to be brothers in arms on Leafs?

Steve Buffery reports in today’s Toronto Sun that Leafs GM Brian Burke highly covets Luke Schenn’s younger brother Brayden, a star forward with the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings. “When parents do a great job with one kid, the younger brother usually gets the same character gene,” said Burke of the tandem of Schenn brothers.

The Penguins will try to even the Stanley Cup Final tonight at Mellon Arena (8pm, CBC). On the Red Wings’ injury front, Kris Drapers is expected to return to the lineup while Hart Trophy nominee Pavel Datsyuk will be a game-time decision.

Around the NHL, reports indicate that the Philadelphia Flyers will sign former Senators’ goaltender Ray Emery when the league’s free agency period begins on July 1. Meanwhile, the Avalanche clean house in Colorado, naming Greg Sherman as general manager while ousting head coach Tony Granato.

Wednesday news: Elite draft picks are in top five – Burke

Brian Burke has identified a consensus group of the top five prospects in the forthcoming entry draft, reports Howard Berger of the FAN 590: John Tavares, Victor Hedman, Matt Duchene, Evander Kane and Brayden Schenn. The Leafs GM has his work cut out for him in trying to trade up from the Leafs’ current position of the 7th slot.

Highly-touted Swedish goaltender Jonas Gustavsson is expected to visit Toronto and two other cities prior to making a decision on his team of choice. Negotiations between Gustavsson and all interested parties have been put on hold, due to the passing of his mother.

Also, no update is available on the progress of the Leafs’ signing of restricted free agent Mikahil Grabovski – who may take the club to arbitration.

The Pittsburgh Penguins climbed back into the Stanley Cup Final with a 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Maxime Talbot led the way for the home team at Mellon Arena with a pair of goals. Full credit is due to the Penguins for their win, however questionable officiating is once again rearing its ugly head in the playoffs.
