Sunday news: Leafs win game for Burke family

With the tragedy of the passing of Brendan Burke still fresh in everyone’s mind, the Leafs played their most complete game of the season, thumping Ottawa 5-0 to bring an end to the Senators’ 11-game winning streak. Brendan Burke, Brian Burke’s youngest son, was honoured with a moment of silence at Air Canada Centre prior to the opening faceoff.

J.S. Giguere posted his second consecutive shutout, becoming the first goalie in franchise history to play his first two games in a Leafs uniform without allowing a goal. Phil Kessel and Luke Schenn each scored twice, while Tyler Bozak also scored for the Leafs.

Saturday news: Remembering Brendan Burke

The hockey community continues to mourn the passing of Brendan Burke, the youngest son of Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke.

Brendan Burke, 21, succumbed to injuries suffered in an auto accident in Indiana, in which bad weather played a factor.

A statement from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president and CEO Richard Peddie said: “On behalf of the entire Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Brian Burke. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Burke family during this extremely difficult time.”

A moment of silence will be held for Brendan Burke prior to tonight’s game when the Leafs host the Ottawa Senators.

In last night’s action, Toronto failed to hang on to a late third-period two-goal lead, losing to the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in regulation time.

Wednesday news: New Leafs help dominate Devils

The first game for J.S. Giguere, Dion Phaneuf and Fredrik Sjostrom in Leafs uniforms was a memorable one as all three new acquisitions were among the game’s three stars in a 3-0 victory over New Jersey on Tuesday night.

Gigure became only the second goalie in team history to post a shutout in his Leafs debut (Ed Belfour, 2002). Dion Phaneuf made his presence felt early, dropping the gloves with Colin White less than 7 minutes into the game. Fredrik Sjostrom contributed on the scoresheet with an assist on the opening goal of the game.

The Leafs’ next game is Friday when they visit the Prudential Center in New Jersey for the second time in a week, which will mark the third game in 8 nights against the Devils.

Monday news: Critics favour the Leafs in blockbuster deals

Reaction towards Sunday’s blockbuster deals seem to be in favour of Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke. Despite the downfall in Dion Phaneuf’s play since he was an All-Star two years ago, there appears to be little doubt that he is the best player, in any of the trades, that changed sweaters on Sunday.

The Leafs first game with their new acquisitions is tomorrow night when they host New Jersey.

Hands up, both of you, who noticed that the new team to which prospect Keith Aulie will report – the Toronto Marlies – ended their four-game losing streak yesterday with a win over Lake Erie.
