Sunday News: Leafs Treat and Trickery

The Leafs showed pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence in Saturday’s 4-3 shootout loss to Montreal. Those traits were most evident in the final minutes of the third frame when Alexei Ponikarovsky brought the Buds to within a goal, and Tomas Kaberle tied the game with 54 seconds left in regulation.

The Leafs’ next game is Tuesday at ACC. It will be their first tilt on home ice since October 17th.

Thursday news: Leafs fall in overtime

Despite holding a late third period lead, the Leafs came up short in Wednesday’s game at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, losing 4-3 in overtime. Nikolai Kulemin scored twice while Lee Stempniak also found the net for Toronto.

The recent passing of a Toronto teen from the H1N1 virus has resonated with Leafs forward Jason Blake on a personal level.

The Leafs’ next game is Friday night in Buffalo.

Tuesday News: Leafs Pull One Off

One is the loneliest number and that’s how it was for the Toronto Maple Leafs since they slipped into a funk after picking up a point in their season opener, until Monday night.

Their 6-3 win over Anaheim tripled their point total to three but parade plans would be premature. At their current pace – three point in nine games – the Buds would finish with a maximum of 27 points.

Bright spots for Toronto, other than tossing a monkeys off their collective back and an albatross from round the throat were Niklas Hagman’s hat trick and goalie Jonas Gustavsson’s first NHL victory.

Neither would have been possible without the solid effort of Tomas Kaberle, who tallied a goal and four assists. Other multi-point performances came from Lee Stempniak with the game winner plus three helpers and Matt Stajan, who had three assists.

The Leafs don’t have the luxury of sitting on their laurels as they’ll be sitting in plane seats a lot this week. They play in Dallas on Wednesday, Buffalo on Friday and have a Halloween tilt in Montreal on Saturday.

Sunday News: Canucks prolong Leafs misery

The Leafs fell 3-1 to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night at GM place leaving Toronto winless in eight games (0-7-1). The team is off to its worst start in franchise history.

Toronto played a spirited first period, but took five straight minor penalties in the opening 20 minutes. Vancouver converted on two of the 5 power-play opportunities, giving them all the offence they would need in front of goalie Roberto Luongo.

Luongo was sensational, making 35 saves overall, and appears to have shaken a mini-slump that plagued the start of his season.

Niklas Hagman had the only goal for Toronto. The Leafs’ next game is Monday night in Anaheim.

In Grand Rapids, the Marlies and the Griffins played to a six-round shootout, with the Griffins prevailing 4-3. Jiri Tlusty scored his sixth goal of the season for the Marlies.

Thursday news: Leafs experiment with 3-on-3 practice

The Leafs moved Wednesday’s workout from the MasterCard Centre to the National Training Rinks facility in Richmond Hill, just north of Toronto. The facility has two rinks which are about three-quarters the size of their regulation NHL counterparts, and are used for 3-on-3 games.

“We just thought it might be a change in pace for them,” said former Leaf and Hall-of-Famer Mike Gartner, who owns the rink in partnership with former NHLer Wes Jarvis.

The Leafs’ next game is Saturday in Vancouver.
