The Leafs fell 3-1 to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night at GM place leaving Toronto winless in eight games (0-7-1). The team is off to its worst start in franchise history.
Toronto played a spirited first period, but took five straight minor penalties in the opening 20 minutes. Vancouver converted on two of the 5 power-play opportunities, giving them all the offence they would need in front of goalie Roberto Luongo.
Luongo was sensational, making 35 saves overall, and appears to have shaken a mini-slump that plagued the start of his season.
Niklas Hagman had the only goal for Toronto. The Leafs’ next game is Monday night in Anaheim.
In Grand Rapids, the Marlies and the Griffins played to a six-round shootout, with the Griffins prevailing 4-3. Jiri Tlusty scored his sixth goal of the season for the Marlies.
