Thursday news: Sabres edge Leafs; Bozak plays at wing

The Leafs’ exhibition season continued with a 3-2 loss to the Sabres at HSBC Arena in Buffalo on Wednesday night. John Mitchell and Jiri Tlusty had the Leafs goals. Joey MacDonald was impressive in net, stopping all 18 shots he faced in the first period to keep his team in the game.

Toronto’s ‘college line’ was broken up as Tyler Bozak was moved to play the opposite wing on Alexei Ponikarovksy’s line, centred by Mikhail Grabovski. “I’m used to coming back and getting low into the defensive zone and working on my assignments down low and it’s tough having to change up your assignments,” Bozak told Jeff Blair of the Globe And Mail. “But at this level, you should be able to play anywhere.”

In Phoenix, Jim Balsillie pledged to keep the Coyotes in Arizona for this season if he is awarded the franchise, however the NHL remains unimpressed.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Pat Burns in his battle with what has been diagnosed as inoperable lung cancer.
