Monday news: Berger – Leafs could have Tavares for Schenn, Kaberle and 1st-rounder

Veteran FAN 590 reporter Howard Berger reports that the Leafs could acquire Tampa Bay’s second overall selection in the 2009 draft. The asking price would be defencemen Luke Schenn and Tomas Kaberle, plus Toronto’s first round pick (7th overall), according to Berger’s blog. “If Burke truly wants a legitimate shot at Tavares, he’ll have no choice but to dangle Schenn as bait,” reads the entry.

Team Canada lost to Russia in the gold medal game of the World Championships for a second straight year. The Canadians outshot their opponents by a wide margin, 38-17, but only Jason Spezza was able to get the puck past Ilya Bryzgalov in a 2-1 loss.

In NHL playoff action, the Red Wings dominated the Ducks 4-1 to gain a three games to two edge in their series heading back to Anaheim. The Bruins rebounded from a pair of lethargic performances in Raleigh to pound the Hurricanes 4-0 on home ice and stave off elimination.

Tonight the Penguins, leading three games to two, will attempt to advance to round three as they host the Capitals (7pm ET, TSN), while at the United Center in Chicago, the Blackhawks look to finish off the Canucks (9pm ET, CBC).
