Saturday news: Leafs shelled in Philly; face Habs tonight

An atrocious first period was the Leafs’ undoing as they fell behind 5-0 after twenty minutes of play, on route to an 8-5 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at Wachovia Center. Goalie Martin Gerber was pulled at the 8:07 mark of the first period, but backup Curtis Joseph fared no better, allowing 2 goals on five shots. Gerber was reinserted for the second and third periods, officially taking the loss in goal.

The Leafs face the resurgent Habs at Air Canada Centre tonight (7:00pm, CBC, AM 640). This morning, Tyler Bozak was officially introduced to the Toronto media, having agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the organization.

Around the NHL, the hockey community mourns the loss of the fiance of the Canucks’ Taylor Pyatt, who lost her life in an auto accident in Jamaica. Pyatt has taken an indefinite leave from his team. On the ice, the Flames’ slumping ways continued with a shutout loss to the Minnesota Wild.

In AHL action, the Marlies regained the final playoff spot in the North Division with an important 3-1 victory in Manitoba against the Moose. The two teams meet later today at MTS Centre.
