Rumours out of Sweden
« on: November 26, 2011, 04:41:10 AM »
And if this has been posted somewhere, I'm sorry but I couldn't find anything.

The rumour is that Toronto (Bergman has been watching the two) might be interested in Joacim Eriksson and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare.

Eriksson commented it in a swedish newspaper saying that he thinks that it's really fun that someone is keeping their eyes on him. Bellemare also commented this saying that it was really good for his confidence.

Joacim Eriksson is the goalie who was drafted by Philly for a few years ago. His current stats for Skellefteå (SEL) is 12 games, 1,56 gaa, 1 so, 94,17 sv%. Bellemare is leading Skellefteå in scoring with 8 goals and 9 assists in 23 games. He's a fast player with a scoring touch. His last season for Leksand in the 2nd league in Sweden he scored 31 goals in 41 games. But that was in the season 2008-2009.

And one thing to remember about Eriksson is that for a few years ago he was coached by one of the best goalie coaches in Sweden. The goalie coach Pekka Alcén has been responsible in Brynäs for a while now, with goalies like Markström, Eriksson, Lindbäck etc coming out of that system, and they do also have one of the national team goalies from the women's team. Pekka has been getting offers from KHL, but turned them down.

His team Brynäs had it quite rough goalie wise last 2 season or so, because they also lost Mattias Modig and Eddie Läck to North America. Eddie only played 12 games for Brynäs though, and Modig didn't get a chance to play any games for Brynäs.

Interesting, although I have no idea what the organization does with another goaltender at this point.  Noone has played long enough, well enough (including Reimer) to be guaranteed a roster spot long-term but the Leafs are already playing guys in the ECHL who probably deserve better but are stuck with the depth that they have.

Maybe someone is on their way out? ;) I was quite surprised that Philly didn't sign Eriksson to a contract, he should be better than Owuya.

I think that it's very wise to scout leagues such as SEL. It wont cost you anything to sign players without NHL-rights, and it could be very beneficial. There are several pretty good NHL-players that took that way. Like Tim Thomas, Brian Rafalski, etc.

Besides imagine having Owuya rapping, while this dude is dancing:

More depth at any position always opens up trade options to fill holes at other positions. I hate to say it but with the way Gustavsson has played, if and when Reimer gets back and plays well, they could very well use Jonas as trade bait to a team needing a goalie. He's starting to show he can carry a heavy workload.

I've heard some really good things about Eriksson in the past, particularly when the Flyers decided to not sign him. I'd give him a shot.

The real question is: can that goalie play in our top 6?

That spot is already reserved for Brydan Irwin.

That should not be a problem.  They can always loan one of their goalies out to another AHL affiliate.  They would keep the rights, the goalie would just play with another team.

That's not exactly an ideal situation, especially for a goalie though. Almost every single team has at least 1 goalie on their AHL team that they would like to see groomed as a potential NHLer, so even if the Leafs got somebody to agree to take a goalie there could potentially be some bias in who gets the majority of the starts.

All teams would be lucky to help the storied Leafs franchise.  ;D

The rumours about Bellemare is popping up again. Apparently several NHL-teams are scouting him during The World Championships. And Toronto and Chicago seems to be leading the hunt. According to Bellemare's current team's Sportchef (basically like GM) the club is aware of the interest from different NHL-teams. So far Bellemare has 6 points in 5 games, but this was before the game vs Slovakia, not sure if he had any there.
