Which Dman would you add in a trade?
« on: January 24, 2012, 03:29:29 PM »
Had a long drawn out argument last night about this. If the Leafs do in fact make a trade for a top 6 forward that can make a difference and in the package the Leafs had to throw in 1 Dman (except for our Captain of course, or Komi 'cause of salary reasons) which guy would you most like to see go. I actually like this group and have no idea which guy I'd want to see leave. So who is and/or will be the least valuable to the Leafs?

At least one guy is getting moved. I'm 100% positive of this.  That said, I have no idea who and the answer to your question rests entirely I suppose on what the return is.

If Dion and Komi can't be included like you said, then it would make some sense to trade either Franson or Schenn. That's simply because all 4 of those guys play the right side and we only have 3 spots for them.

I wouldn't be against trading Aulie either though, for the right package. Or Liles since he's an upcoming UFA.

Aulie. As much as I like him, I think he has the lowest ceiling of the younger guys and he's also probably the easiest to replace. In fact, the Leafs may already have replacement in house with Holzer.

That's fair. There's also probably the most duplication with Aulie.

He's my answer as well.

But in terms of obtaining that top 6 forward as proposed (or that elusive 1st line centre), he's the least likely to be able to accomplish that.

Well, that depends on who/what else in involved in the deal. The original proposal did talk about it being part of a package.

Would Aulie on his own be enough for Ruutu? I honestly don't know if that would be an overpayment or an underpayment so perhaps it's close?

Well, I reject the idea that Phaneuf is untouchable.  He's the one I think would be the best to move to get a high-end forward.

I wouldn't trade practically any player for Ruutu. I don't see the team in a solid position to be trading any assets for rentals or almost any player they could acquire as ufas the following year.

It goes against what I said some time ago about thinking long term only but I'm thinking the opportunity might exist to re-sign him. I think he's exactly the kind of player we need.

Unless a package were to include Kessel or Lupul, I personally don't see a team asking for Aulie over Schenn/Gardiner/Franson in such a deal.

But we never know who Burke will pull a fast one on.

Either way I think Aulie might be an overpayment, fwiw, I'm not sure a player needs to go back in a deal for him but it's hard to say from Carolina's end.
