Opening results for the Men's Ice Hockey event:

Team Slovenia stunned Team USA 3-2 in OT.  Slovakia's Jan Mursak not only scored the tying goal in a third period comeback but also the eventual OT winning goal.

The US led for two periods but could not sustain the momentum, as the Slovenia, known for their persistence, rallied from a 2-0 deficit.
It was a lesson learned for the Americans who no doubt expected victory.  All was going very well until that third period collapse.

Team Slovakia edged Team OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia) 3-2.
Slovakia got the go-ahead goal in the third period, the eventual game winner.

A fast-paced game that saw Gold medal favourites Team OAR take an early lead in the first period, only to relinquish it in that same period.

Thursday results:

Team Canada outhandled Team Switzerland 5-1 in it's opening game of the Men's Ice Hockey event here at Kwandong Hockey Centre.

Goals for Canada came from Rene Bourque & Wojtek Wolski with two goals apiece, while Maxim Noreau added another.  it was also a three assist performance for Derek Roy and two by Chris Lee.

The Canadians scored in the first period and never relinguished their lead, until Team Switzerland lit up the scoreboard in the third period, but by then, Canada had a comfortable lead.

In other games, Team Sweden shutout Team Norway 4-0.

Team Czech Republic edged Team (South) Korea 2-1, in a game that the Korean underdogs should be proud of.  Before a throng of screaming spectators, not to mentio the N.Korean cheerleaders, Team Korea took the lead on Cho Min-Ho's shot in the first period.

The Czechs answered back in tying and then taking the lead also in that first period.  it was a physical game the rest of the way, as Korean goaltender Mike Dalton faced forty shots on goal.  He was the key in keeping his squad in pace of the Czechs.

I only watched the first period and while I was surprised by how much I was rooting for this weird collection of ragtag pros I think there's still a big problem in international hockey with how the games are played. There's always a lot of speed on the breakout and through the neutral zone but every team traps at the blueline and then collapses around the goalie. As a result you get lots of free ice on the outside and tons of cycle play but almost nothing resembling offensive creativity. Goals are going to get scored on PP's and deflections mainly.

Watching a crazy talented group of NHLers mitigated it somewhat but I have a feeling a lot of these games are just going to be possession battles and lucky shot contests.

Honestly, I was fine with pros being at the Olympics when it was truly best on best.  With the rag tag teams I’m not sure why this isn’t an amateur tournament.   I’m away on vacation right now anyway but I honestly don’t really care too much about this team.

Results for Friday Feb.16:

Oh, no, Canada!  Team Canada, actually Maxim Noreau can curse the post, as the Canadians lost 3-2 to Team Czech Republic in the shootout.

With both squads tied at the end of regulation, and with no winner in the OT, the game went to a shootout and that turned out to be Canada's Achilles heel.

Playing a strong offensive game and outshooting the Czechs, the Canadians seemed disorganized defensively allowing the Czechs to capitalize on their chances.

Canada's goaltender Ben Scrivens came to the fore as did his opponent, Czech Pavel Francouz.  However, Francouz stymied the Canadian forwards when it counted the most, in the shootout, and was the key to keeping his Czech Republic teammates in the game throughout regulation & OT.

Canadian goals were by Mason Raymond & René Bourque.  Canada led 2-1 in the first period but the Czechs tied it up in the second.

Now, about that post....

Elsewhere, Team Finland shut down Team Norway 5-1; Team Sweden-led Rasmus Dahlin (no he didn't score and logged the fewest shifts) shutout Team Germany 1-0.

Team OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia) blew away Team Slovenia 8-2.  The Russians led by the likes of Ilya Kovalchuk, Mikhail Grigirenko, & Pavel Datsyuk, proved an overwhelming opponent for the Slovenians.  The Russian squad is highly touted as Gold medal favourites.

Results for Saturday (Feb.17):

Team Switzerland routed Team (South) Korea 8-0; Team Slovenia edged Team Slovakia 3-2 in the shootout.  The Slovenia secured second spot in their group and have been quite the surprise here.  This is their second non-regulation win (having beat Team USA in OT in their opener earlier).

Team OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia) continued their offensive juggernaut in shutting out Team USA 4-0.  Both teams played a physical game but the Russians, with two goals from Ilya Kovalchuk and Nikolai Prokhorkin plus strong goaltending presence from Vasili Korsechkin, prevailed.

Plus, Team Germany prevailed  over Team Norway 2-1 in the shootout.

Results for Sunday Feb.18:

Team Canada peppered forty shots at Team Korea goaltender Mike Salton, and came away with a 4-0 triumph, in a rather unconvincing win.

Eric O'Dell, Christian Thomas, Maxim Lapierre, and Gibert Brule were the Canadian scorers.

While Canada did outshoot Korea 18-2 in the first and 13-3 in the second period, somehow this group didn't seem affirm the idea that it can dominate, especially playing against a hockey rookie country such as Korea.

Kevin Poulin stood in goal for the Canadians, coming off a shootout loss earlier to the Czech Republic.

Elsewhere, Team Czech Republic downed Team Switzerland 4-1; while Team Sweden defeated Team Finland 3-1.
