Gold Medal game results:

Team USA emerged victorious in a 3-2 shootout win over Team Canada.

In a game that was never short on dramatics, the Americans, on Monique Lamoureaux's shootout goal and goaltender Maddie Rooney's save on Meghan Agosta sealed the victory.

This Gold medal match featuring the bitter rivalry between these two squads could best be described as a game of inches, or centimetres, or what have you.

Though the US took the lead in the first period on a goal by Hillary Knight, Canada got goals from Haley Irwin and Marie-Philip Poulin, which vaulted Canada ahead 2-1 in the second period, only to have the Americans tie it up on a breakaway goal by Monique Lamoureaux.  Still tied at the end of regulation time, the teams put on a thrilling, nail-biting, nerve-wracking OT performances, though the US held the edge offensively, as Canadian 'keeper Shannon Szabados stonewalled every American scoring attempt.

Then, the freaking shootout, where Canada got shootout goals from Meghan Agosta, a precise wrist shot that found the upper corner of the net, and by Mélodie Daoust with a beautifully choreographed side deke that took Rooney out to sea.
The Americans got their shootout goals from Gigi Marvin and Amanda Kessel (yes, Phil's sister).  However, Monique Lamoureaux (her again) had other ideas as she smoothly and sharply foiled Szabados.  When Rooney stopped the snapper from Agosta....game over!    Team USA wins their first Gold medal in twenty years.

Sheer jubilation and joy on the part of the American team, with their proudly waving their flags & all.

Sheer heartache for a crestfallen Team Canada.  They came so close in chasing a record of five straight Gold medals, so close....ohhh!

Well, what can we say?  To so many female hockey fans in Canada, these Women have done us proud. To us they're still the best no matter the outcome.

What is so different about Women's hockey is these Women hockey players, and by that I mean all female participants, bring a certain humanity to the meaning of the words  elation and heartbreak.

Women wear their emotions on their sleeve, and on their faces, as the Canadians did, weeping and holding back nothing.  No male can hold a candle to that.

Congratulations to Team USA who earned a hard-fought victory.

Congratulations to Team Canada for just making all of Canada proud.

Congratulations ladies, for a thrilling and emotional rollercoaster ride of a Gold medal performance!  Whoa!!

Bronze Medal results:

Team Finland defeated Team OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia) 3-2 in winning the Bronze Medal.

For the Russian squad,  where the word disappointment was not an apt description,  they had their best showing in finishing fourth overall.

Congratulations to Team Suomi.
