Lidstrom as the 5th best defenceman? Terry Sawchuk and Jacques Plante as the 1-2 goalies? Glenn Hall over Hasek? Jagr all the way down at 23?

Jagr should be much higher.

Messier at #13 and no Yzerman? Lemieux at #4 behind a guy he almost outscored in half the games?

It also doesn't have Matthews.

How high would you put Lidstrom?  I have no problem having Orr, Harvey, and Shore ahead of him.  Bourque is the only guy I'd move behind him.

Jagr at 23 is definitely bad.

Nah.

Yeah, #13 for Moose and Stevie-Y not on the list isn't good.  They should be right around the same spot, and if that spot was closer to 24/25 and one was left off I'd have no problem with it.

As for Howe vs Lemieux.  Era-adjusted that scoring difference isn't anywhere near as big:  1540 for Mario in 915 games, 2156 for Gordie in 1687 games (not counting his age 51 season)).  I'd still have Mario ahead of him though, just saying you are making it out to be a bigger WTF than it really is.

I doubt it played into their ranking but they have Doug Harvey's career point total listed as 1225 in that article which is off by 700 or so.

To that end I'd rate Lidstrom as the #2 defenseman of all time with some consideration to him going at #1 because of durability. I think that while you don't want to eliminate the past entirely in a case like Lidstrom vs. Harvey where the two resumes are fairly even, you should probably give a nod to the arc of history being one where better players come later.

I think they used his PIM in place of his point total!  LOL

This really reads like a list that's more about buying into a certain mythos a particular generation of hockey fans grew up with rather than any quantitative analysis or meaningful argument. You can appreciate and acknowledge Richard's place within the game's history without trying to make the somewhat ridiculous argument that he was a better player than Ovechkin or Jagr.

I think you're picking the flyshit out of pepper there Nik...does an extra 685 points on a career really affect things?

Quick TSN, list the next 75 players.  All of whom are better than Malkin.  ::)
