Feel free to discuss the movie and any spoilers here. If you haven't watched the movie yet you might not want to read any further.

The movie had a Battlestar Galatica feel to it.  It was really good.  Only one scene that I wish had been taken out of the movie.  Space Leia I am looking in your direction.

Full disclosure that I'm pretty sure I added when I talked about Force Awakens as well: I'm not a huge Star Wars guys. I only saw the original trilogy for the first time maybe 10 years or so ago, so I was really late to the game. I thought they were great movies but I didn't have this big emotional attachment to them as someone who grew up with them would have.

But I absolutely loved this movie. It was non-stop action from start to finish but it also still found time to make you laugh, feel sad, and to really give a crap about the characters on the screen.

I'm glad that Kylo Ren wasn't as much of an emo-punk as he was in the 1st one. Although it was pretty funny that it felt like they were going to go down the route again when he smashed his helmet early on but from there I actually really liked his character and the turns that he took.

I'm also glad that they took risks and didn't just follow an established pattern from the original trilogy. Who the heck saw Snoke getting killed there? Even when Kylo pulled that awesome sabre move I thought that he was still going to survive it somehow. One of the biggest things that I was praying they wouldn't do was making Rey a Skywalker or Kenobi or some other known family. I'm so glad they made her parents just some random dopes. This article here summed up my reasons for that pretty well: http://mashable.com/2017/12/14/star-wars-the-last-jedi-rey-parents/#wizAz6PwJkqZ

Yeah, I totally get what they were going for there: remind everybody that Leia herself has some force powers. But it was weird. It felt like she died and then the force brought her back to life. They should have done something where the force just saved her before the act of dying.

Yeah, that sums it up pretty well.  As much as this was a Star Wars movie, it was about making a movie that extended the Star Wars canon and allowed for growth.

Disappointed is the one word that sums up the movie for me. It was just really, really, meh.

I didn’t really like it, I think?

Rey was once again overpowered.  No training and doing impressive Jedi things.  When Snoke was killed I figured maybe Ren gets a power boost out of that but nope, Rey is his equal and while REN gets knocked out from their struggle, Reynis fine to take the broken light sabre, get an escape pod and get back to the Falcon.

Just in comparison to Luke in the OT, I never really felt at any point that he was Vader’s equal until he went a little dark.  Rey just seems to have all the answers to everything without any real conflict.

I absolutely loved it. It improved on virtually every aspect of 'Force Awakens' (which I enjoyed quite a bit).

Granted it could have been shortened by maybe 10-15 minutes and I still would have liked to have known more about Snoke and his origin but those are really the only minor complaints I can think of. I just loved how all of the action incorporated an actual purpose and tactical element. It was truly a spectacle.

Rumour has it that one of the stand alone movies will address the Snoke origin.  It's one of the advantages that they have now with the stand alone movies.  They can strip some aspects of story, and back fill it latter.

I didn't mind the Rey/Luke/Emo Ren stuff. That part of the movie was mostly tolerable. I also don't have issues with Rey's character or her supposed "Mary Sue" status. I think her force abilities are pretty consistent with other powerful and untrained force-sensitive characters we've seen throughout the series. I think one of the themes of the movie is that anyone can use the force and be strong with the force without being tied to some powerful force-wielding lineage. I liked the fact that her parents were nobody.

I hated Poe Dameron in this movie. Maybe it's bad writing, or maybe it's Oscar Isaac? I'd be ok if he never spoke any lines and just flew his X-Wing and did cool stuff in that. Admiral Holdo's character was dumb for nearly all of her screen time. Literally the only smart move she made involved killing herself and begged the question why she didn't just do that as part of Plan A. I can't believe they killed Ackbar to put her in charge. How they heck are they ever going to know if it's a trap now?

The Finn/what's-her-name subplot was pointless. It's like they slightly re-wrote an episode of Star Wars Rebels and crammed it into the movie just to give Finn something to do.

"The past is dead, let it go. Kill it if you have to." That's what this movie is really about. Disney saying "it's ours now, b---h". Star Wars is dead. To those of you who liked/loved the movie, I wish I saw the same movie you did.

I have to be honest that some of my disappointment with Ren/Rey was that I was kind of hoping for a KOTOR-like Revan-Bastilla combo.

While I agree with a lot of what you said before this paragraph I think this is maybe WHY I quite liked it. I never saw the original trilogy as a kid. In fact I first really remember actively watching them (I'm sure they'd been on tv and I'd seen bits and pieces) when the prequels were about to be released.

The first Star Wars movie I saw in a cinema was The Phantom Menace. So really it could only improve from there...

But my real point is that I don't have that emotional attachment and reverence for the original 3 and I think that gives me a slightly different perspective. I think these new 2 have kind of diverged from what you would call a "Star Wars" type movie and are better for it. While the prequels tried to be too like the originals and failed partly for that

I really was going to stay out of this... but I have to chime
I'm just on this point. This is just completely wrong. If anything people didn't like the prequels because they were too different from the original trilogy.

And if anything the force awakens was a retread of episode 4. Almost comically so.

And I think this is where the last Jedi is a bit divisive. It too, like the prequels, is striking a new path and I respect that idea. I'm good with a new direction.

I'm not exactly sure what new path they were trying to strike out on, nor why blazing a new trail necessitated tearing down everything built before it.

I get that they want to move on from the OT characters but they didn't have to murder Luke the way they did. How you go from having so much hope and optimism that you think you can turn Darth Vader to basically just giving up because some kid had bad thoughts is just asinine.
