Ummm ... I don't follow hockey as closely as I used to but am I allowed to describe the Rangers forwards as "an old Rick Nash plus a bunch nobodies"?  How did that team get 100+ points last year?  Who are those guys?

They've sort of silently done a really good job of putting together a group of big, fast players who maybe aren't household names but who are pretty talented nonetheless. Chris Kreider, for instance, was a first round pick who's big(6'3, 225) with hands(three straight 20 goal seasons). Again, not a star but a good player. Kevin Hayes, Jimmy Vesey, JT Miller...all of them sort of fit that mold. Big, American players who mainly all went the NCAA route and so came into the league a little older.

What worked for them last year was combining that size and speed with a few highly skilled Europeans(Zibanejad, Zucarello) and some Veteran types who are still useful(Nash, Stepan, Grabner).

So, yeah, lacking name recognition and high end star power but honestly maybe the deepest pool of skilled forwards in the league outside of the Leafs or someone.

Remarkable ... I certainly would not have guessed they were fourth offensively last year with that group (plus Stepan).  Grabner certainly had a career year shooting-wise.... Their 2nd-line center was just drafted 21st last June it looks like ... he can't be very good relative to a Kadri or even a Bozak, can he?

My guess is either that they saw something in Chytil that they really liked or they were waiting for something to materialize that just never did. Either way they're probably counting on full seasons from Zibanejad(37 points in 56 games) and Buchnevich(20 points in 41 games) to replace Stepan's offense.

The one thing I'd add though is that despite Carlton having listed Chytil as their 2nd line C he only played 7:40 on Thursday. I think it's pretty safe to say that the #1 and #2 Centres are Zibanejad and Hayes with Desharnais in the #3 spot for now.

He is centering their 2nd line though between Nash and Zuccarello. Their 1st game just didn't have a lot of 5-on-5 action and he doesn't play specialty teams.

You know what I love the most about watching the Inside the NBA? How they're always talking about AAU teams and how Basketball defines America and how kids playing on Church League teams eventually become pros and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Or they just sell the sport and the athletes who are in it.

I just remembered that we are likely going to get some sort of nonsense "Canadians standing for the anthem" crap out of senile Don at the intermission.  Can't wait.......

Nice movement by Gardiner and Zaitsev on that shift.
