Game Notes

NYR
•Henrik Lundqvist (0-1-0, 3.09 GAA, .880 Sv%) will likely start for the Rangers, although with New York playing at home against Montreal on Sunday we might get to see Ondrej Pavelec's first appearance as a Ranger
•Filip Chytil, the 21st overall draft pick in the 2017 entry draft, is making his NHL debut in his D+1 year as New York's 2C, presumably because they forgot to fill it after trading away Derek Stepan
•Kevin Shattenkirk led New York in ice-time in his Rangers debut, playing 23:48. Just under 8 minutes of that was on the PP where the Rangers went 2-for-6 against Colorado

TOR
•Andersen (1-0-0, 2.00 GAA, .946 Sv%) will likely strt for the Leafs
•Babcock made a couple of line-up adjustments at practice, swapping Fehr and Borgman out for Moore and Rosen. In the spirit of rotating the healthy scratches he also inserted Josh Leivo into the line-up over Matt Mart... haha just kidding

Injuries

•Jesper Fast - Hip - Injured Reserve

•Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
•Joffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely

Fehr got the Winnipeg start for the proximity to his home town. Moore is getting this one because of the years he played in New York.

Leivo doesn’t get to play in his hometown or with the team that drafted him.

Ummm ... I don't follow hockey as closely as I used to but am I allowed to describe the Rangers forwards as "an old Rick Nash plus a bunch nobodies"?  How did that team get 100+ points last year?  Who are those guys?

Jesper Fast - Injured Reserve or California Gold-Rush Prospector?

I say, why not both?

Moving Fehr out is a bit of a head scratcher, I thought his play was very good, especially getting pucks out on the PK. I guess Babs is just giving the guys a chance.

Heard Babcock say something about wanting to see all the guys in actual game situations. You can gather only so much from exhibition games where not every player is going full out. If Rosen and Moore both play well tonight, it's a nice situation for the Leafs to have. Options at different positions is never a bad thing.

Probably Borgman, Rosen, Fehr and Moore see some kind of rotation until injuries, along with Kapanen, Soshnikov and Leivo waiting for the call-up.

Yeah, well his tendency to put up points doesn't outweight the ummm,  yeah the stuff that Martin can do.

Lundqvist is a difference maker still for them I'd say, could steal games

One of the best of all time but the King is getting old and last year was starting to show signs of ageing methinks. Although he will probably be right on his game tonight. Hope Freddie can stand on his head again.

They've sort of silently done a really good job of putting together a group of big, fast players who maybe aren't household names but who are pretty talented nonetheless. Chris Kreider, for instance, was a first round pick who's big(6'3, 225) with hands(three straight 20 goal seasons). Again, not a star but a good player. Kevin Hayes, Jimmy Vesey, JT Miller...all of them sort of fit that mold. Big, American players who mainly all went the NCAA route and so came into the league a little older.

What worked for them last year was combining that size and speed with a few highly skilled Europeans(Zibanejad, Zucarello) and some Veteran types who are still useful(Nash, Stepan, Grabner).

So, yeah, lacking name recognition and high end star power but honestly maybe the deepest pool of skilled forwards in the league outside of the Leafs or someone.

Lundqvist had a .910 SV% last year. He wasn't terrible but he wasn't the reason they were a good team. They were the 4th highest scoring team in the league.

Or trade? They may see enough of some guys to feel comfortable trading someone else
