Excuse me ... to refresh your memory, it was actually *me personally willing the outcome* of the lottery that year that delivered Matthews to us:

No need for thanks, I was happy to do it for the good of the community.

See, I've always credited my 10+ years of message board posts advocating a full on rebuild. Success has many fathers, failure's an orphan I suppose.

Not sure what your point is here...Kessel is second in league scoring at the moment.

The point is people didn't like the trade at the time but it yielded what look to be some pretty valuable assets. And particularly while trading Kessel weakened the team in the short term getting tradable assets for him let the team address specific areas of need(namely goaltending) later on.

As well as, you know, Matthews and such.

I think the argument was, and I wasn't complaining about the deal much at the time, but the argument was that it wasn't the a great deal, and that there was no big hurry.  Perhaps though, it was the best they could muster.  I'm still not sure that it was necessary at that point, but again, I didn't much complain.

As it turns out, Kessel is as valuable, and has been as valuable, as we thought he was.  And the Leafs retained salary, let's not forget.

The reason I was questioning the post was because the rationale was about acquiring assets...well, what's Kessel worth today?  Could we have traded Reilly and Gardiner instead?  Maybe Kadri?

The Leafs won a lottery, so let's not think that this was all a planned thing.  Some deals they'll win, some they'll lose...but I don't think they won the Kessel deal.

Having said that, I think you and I were on the same page about trading Kadri, JVR, and Bozak some time ago.  And I still think that they should have.

I'm all for accumulating assets, but I just don't think that the Kessel deal was very good...not terrible, just not a great move.  I think that winning the lottery makes it defensible to some, but we all know that it was a lottery situation that made him a Leaf.

Auston Matthews, who would score the game’s opening goal and again in the shootout, said Kadri’s fight fired up the victorious Leafs.

“He isn’t afraid of anybody,” Matthews said. “He’s a strong guy. We don’t call him the Moose for nothing. He knows what he’s doing out there.”

Never heard that before.  It's better than the Sportsnet one.
