Time moves on.  I no longer watch/care about football because of the appalling head injury incidence.  I no longer watch or care about the Olympics because of the appalling commercialism.

You have zero patriotism, you cannibal.

Or, you know, I'm more into entertaining hockey than I am national chest thumping.

I'd take it even a step further. The evidence that hosting the Olympics does real legitimate harm to economies, and in particular the poorer parts of the host cities, has long had me teetering on the edge of thinking they're really something that should be actively boycotted.

That combined with their history of really appalling apolitical decisions and willingness to operate as propaganda arms of fascist regimes(read up on the history of the torch relay) make it a pretty tough moral decision to defend.

Don't forget the exploitative sex trafficking surrounding the whole event.

And the environmental damage.

I mean, I used to love watching the Winters.  The last one I really enjoyed was Lillehammer in 1994 -- that was pretty low-key.  The Summers, not for decades.

Now?  Blech.

What about the athletes? Focus on them, their athletic ability and devotion to their craft and country is real.

If you genuinely care about what these athletes are doing, whether it's figure skaters or shot putters or whatever, then all of those sports have World Championships that you can enjoy without supporting a corrupt, crypto-fascist organization.

I was gonna say Kylie Masse just set a world record yesterday in the backstroke. It's a shame what the Olympic Games have become.

You can officially kill any "Maybe Ovechkin will go anyway?" speculation:

Interestingly for my sport (rowing) the Olympics is 100% seen as the pinnacle. In the year of the Olympics the World Championships basically becomes an u23 and reserves event. The entire sport is based on 4 year cycles around Olympics, coaches tend to get 4 year contracts etc.

I don't think that's the case for hockey at all, the Stanley Cup is probably the pinnacle with World Championships being similar to the rowing events with only those out of the Stanley Cups going. So I actually see why the Olympics SHOULD be the pinnacle  in a similar kind of way...

I'll never really understand the need to constantly be screwing around with the Maple Leaf. There's one on the flag. Use it.
