I think the buzz was legit, but it sounds like McPhee's pledge of allegiance on side deals put a kibosh on a lot of moves.

I don't know. I think the potential for movement was overstated because of the expansion draft, and the expectation that teams would need to move players to avoid losing them for nothing. I do expect there to be a few trades in the next couple days, but not the flood some pundits have been hinting at/implying. Maybe a little more than the typical pre-draft and draft day deals, but it's not going to be trade-o-rama or anything. I think Vegas will keep almost all of the players they drafted until closer to the trade deadline to try to spread out their prospect development, etc.

If Vegas was actually intent on snagging BPA from each list and holding them properly ransom as expected, there would have been a massive redistribution of assets to fit everyone's protection schemes. Instead, McPhee took relatively soft side deals plus a weird no trade pledge to simplify his field, and everyone's options dried up to dealing directly with Vegas.

But, what McPhee did is what everyone should have been expecting (maybe not to much the no trade pledge, but the side deals). He couldn't just take BPA. He had a minimum number at each position he had to fill, a minimum cap he had to reach, etc. On top of that, he was building a team, not hording assets. The selections the team made had to be able to lead to that in short order.

It seems like the consensus out there is that the Leafs are in talks with Vegas to flip  a D man Toronto's way.

Dumba looks like the best option. He's a right hand shot, good point shot, logs lots of minutes and is only 22.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/toronto-maple-leafs-trade-right-shot-defenceman-vegas-golden-knights-expansion-draft-dumba-vatanen-manson-van-riemsdyk-methot/

Rumour has Vegas trying to sign Minnesota RFA Erik Haula as part of their exclusive negotiating period, which would take Dumba off the table.

Does this make sense? I'm kind shocked that they took Haula over Dumba.

They also got Alex Tuch, who was a 2014 1st rounder, as part of the deal. It's not the decision I would have gone with, but I can kind of see the logic. They got two young, quality assets instead of one they probably would have traded to to get the equivalent of Haula and Tuch.
