Colorado granted permission to talk to Dubas
« on: May 23, 2017, 10:24:57 PM »

David Alter‏ @dalter
.@FriedgeHNIC reports the Colorado Avalanche have received permission to speak with Leafs AGM Kyle Dubas.

Obviously doesn't mean much quite yet. Sakic is still technically the GM in Colorado but given his godawful track-record with the club he might be in line to be "promoted" to President which would open up the GM spot. Hard to imagine the Leafs would give them permission to talk to Kyle for a lateral move.

This also gives weight to some rumours that have been flying around that Hunter is more likely to take over for Lou than Dubas is.

I'd rather Dubas than either.   Blargh

Agreed. I don't see Shanny doing it, but if another team was seriously circling Dubas right now I'd thank Lou for his services but tell him it's Kyle's show now.

Likewise, I'd give Lou the Cliff Fletcher treatment, a cheque for as long as he wants one.

Yep, and I'd give Hunter plenty of dough to be happy as a Head Scout or whatever title he wants and give GM to Kyle.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Can't hold a guy back, so hopefully everything works out well for Dubas. I'm fine with Hunter as the other option.

This would be a reason I'm not as thrilled about bringing Lou on board.  Beyond having to pay a decent draft pick for him (thanks NHL) potentially losing a great young hockey mind in the process.  Not thrilled at all.

Start at around 8:30 to skip the inane intro. Dubas talks about what it was like working in the Soo (where everyone knows your name), what it was like leading up to the Leafs job, and some general philosophy about hockey and work.

Remember though, Dubas would also be the one seeking the interview...he could have turned Sakic down, then there wouldn't be any permission needed, and nobody would ever know about it.

Hopefully he sticks around, but it wouldn't be the worst thing for him to get more experience with another team, different point of view, etc... He can always come back later.

Per the podcast I posted above, Dubas' philosophy is to focus on the present work. He finds that any time he is looking for the next job his present work suffers. It's basically #TrusttheProcess.

So in this case, I'm pretty confident in saying it isn't him looking for work.

In general, our management's philosophy has been about development. Up front, they were already talking about developing executives (ostensibly for the draft picks, but haha NHL'd it). Babcock expects his assistants to get jobs elsewhere at some point, so he's always on the hunt for people with potential in those roles (Sportsnet via PPP).

I see nothing wrong with the Leafs doing Dubas the courtesy of letting offers come through and letting him decide what's best for his career and his family.

Lou's 74 and is about to go into the 3rd and final year of his contract. There's really no reason to lose somebody like Dubas over keeping him for 1 more season.

Let's not forget too that Lou himself basically said the next Leafs GM job is Dubas' to lose at his introductory press conference.

That's what's concerning to me.  Why not just say no to allowing him to interview.  Tell him he has the job.  If Dubas insists on getting the GM role, move Lou into a "Senior Advisor to the GM" title.

Well yeah, that's what makes me think that the Leafs have Hunter pegged to take over now, not Dubas. And they've probably told him that. Which isn't exactly awful. I think Hunter can be a good GM, and it was impossible that we'd keep both those guys long-term. But I just think Dubas is the better way to go.
