Senators 2   Penguins 1   OT    Ottawa leads series 1 game to 0.

The Ottawa Senators' forward Bobby Ryan scored on a breakaway in the first overtime period to win for the Senators.

The Senators managed to thwart all five of the Penguins power plays in the game and even took the lead in the first period on a goal by Jean Gabriel Pageau.  The Senators lead wouldn't last long as Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin tied it up in the third. Then came OT and Ryan's heroics.

Kesselmania Runs Wild, by Jake Guentzel:

A really fun read by a young guy blown away by playing with the likes of Crosby, Kessel and Malkin.

Right now, I don't see how a team beats the Senators.  They have perhaps the best player on the planet playing for them.  Also, they are simply outworking the other team.  This may be the year that Ottawa gets the cup.

Thanks for sharing, HS! What a great story Guentzel has been so far.

He's not only a great wingman for Crosby, but also for his brother (1:22):

2nd period of this game just finished. 0-0. Pittsburgh absolutely dominated this period though. I haven't seen anything like it so far in these playoffs. Not sure Ottawa had a single 30+ second shift in the offensive zone. With that said, a ton of the shots Pittsburgh took were either blocked or missed the net.

Their line in particular seemed to constantly be in the offensive zone but just couldn't create any significant chances.

And of course Kessel is the one who ends up scoring the game winner, assisted by his buddy Malkin:

Well, I'll be - sometimes, fighting does work! When it's done verbally, and with a teammate.

YAAWWWNNN... Guy Boucher is coaching a real sleeper of a series. 1-3-1 makes for a slow game.

It's worked for them up to this point though.

If I were coaching a slower, less talented team than the opponent's, I'd definitely force them into playing a boring, slow pace that my guys could control better.

Penguins 1   Senators 5   Ottawa leads series 2 games to 1.

How about that, eh?   The Ottawa Senators scored four goals in the first period at the boisterous Canadian Tire Centre.  It has been ten years since the last time Ottawa participated  in a Conference Final.

The Penguins solicited a change in their goaltending as Marc-Andre Fleiry was replaced by Matt Murray.  By then, the game looked well out of reach for Pittsburgh, a team already decimated by injuries.

Excuses?  By and large there weren't any except to say that Pittsburgh was suffocated by the Senators' neutral zone defence and shot blocking.

A job very well done by Ottawa.  Boribg hockey?  Nah, not when it counts.

Man, I'm going to have to put up with a whole year of Sens are Stanley Cup winners talk.  I mean, if the shoe was on the other foot, I wouldn't want anyone taking anything away from the Leafs if they were doing this.  Hard not to get jealous of the Sens success sometimes.  Melnyk doesn't help matters either, as he seems like the type who likes to twist the knife.

Apparently Guy Boucher is an amazing coach. They go from trap to attack overnight. I guess they figured why sit back with all the injuries PIT has.
